OBITUARY.

LAURENCE ARCUS; AGED 78.

. Many residents' of the Horowhenua ■ district will regret to learn of , the death of Mr Laurence Arcus, formerly of Ohau, who'passed away yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R. The deceased, who was 78 years of age., was a native of Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands, and came to New Zealand as ship’s carpenter on the Avalanche, arriving in December, 1875. Mr Arcus lived in Wellington,_ carrying on the business of a shipwright, for 20 years, removing to Ohau 33 years ago. He followed the occupation of a builder in this district, erecting mauy residences in the territory extending from Shannon to Otaki, also constructing some of the early bridges in the County. The late Mr Arcus, whose wife- died at Ohau four years ago, went to Hamilton about a year later, to reside with his daughter. He leaves a family of five, consisting of Messrs James Arcus (Foxton) and J. L.. Aicus (Wellington), Mcsdames F. C. Walkley (Palmerston North), R. Street (Hamilton), and C. Lund (Timaru); also 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Mr Peter Arcus, of Levin, is a brother of the deceased.
