JUNIORS.
WANDERERS v. SHANNON
The above junior teams met on the Weraroa ground on Saturday, and after a well-contested game, the Shannon team won by 22 to 6. The ground was in good order, a strong wind hampered both sides. Shannon won through having tetter combination than their rivals. The Wanderers’ backs with the exception of Hirini, Vickers, and Davis, were very weak. Hirini gave a grand display and was the best back on the ground. The Blacks kicked off and the Reds securing started good passing. Holden Bros., playing well together, sent the ball to Saxon, who scored. Mason failed with the kick. 3 —o. The Red forwards, led by Guy, took play to Black line, where the Black backs tried passing, one of their men slipping when looking dangerous. The Red backs made another passing rush, the ball reaching Birchall* who m'ade for the .line, but was pushed out at the corner. The Black* forwards .later carried the ball over Shannon’s line, but failed to score. The Red forwards, headed by Jude and Lee, carried play, to Wanderers’ 25, where Dais secured and after a good run was taken by B. Holden. Passing between the Holden Bros., Mason and McEwen saw the latter score. Mason failed with the kick. 6—o. The kick out was followed up by the Black pack, hut a speculator by Morse saved the situation and later Mabey gained ground by a lbng line kick. From a line out, N. Holden kicked too hard over Blacks ’ line, forcing Levin; Mabey also kicked too hard and Levin were forced,again. Ngatuna was prominent in attack and passed to N. Holden, to Birchall, who ran well down the line, eventually running out. Mason tried a pot shot, the ball just going outside' the posts. The Blacks’ forwards later were pressing to Davis, who secured and running from Shannon and Mabey miskicked across half way scored under the posts. No goal resulted. 6 —3. The Reds from a scramble near Blacks’ line saw BatE score. Mason again failed. 9—3. The Blacks’ forwards made good progress, Mabey again saving, Guy .started a good dribbling rush, which was taken on by Lankshear and Curran. MeEwan secured, and passing to B. Holden to Mason, saw Mason score. The kick failed. Half time score: Shannon 12, Wanderers 3.
On resuming, the Blacks started off well, led by Mullaney. They kept Shannon busy. Several fierce scrums near the Shannon line took place, and only good defence saved scores, Saxon saving a certain score by kicking over the dead ball line. Later for off-side play by Shannon Hirini kicked a penalty. 12—6. The Blacks returned to the attack, Mabey sacing. The Beds now asserted themselves, Ngatuna ami Jude carrying the ball to Levin’s line where Holden Bros., Mason and Saxon handled the ball, the latter dropping it when in a good position to score. Later another Bed passing rush saw Mason slip, losing another good chance. The Blacks came again in a passing rush, Vickers beating two Beds, then kicking over’ Shannon’s line, forcing Shannon. Davis made a good dash for the line, being pushed out in time. Freni a melee near half way, Jude opened up the play by passing out to Batt, who passed to Birchall, who passed infield to McEwan to N. Holden, B. Holden, Mason to Saxon, who scored a good try. Mason converted. 17—6. This was the best try of the day. From a scrum Jude scored the final try. Mason converting. Shannon 22, Wanderers 6.
