WANDERERS DEFEAT FOXTON. Thi3 game was played on the Levin Domain on Saturday in the presence of a fair attendance of the public, many •visitors being present from Shannon, After the recent rain the ground was heavy, which evidently did not suit the Foxton fifteen, their form being a long way below what they have displayed in their games this season. ( The match throughout can be termed patchy and with the exception of the latter portion of the second half was uninteresting from the spectators’ point of view. Jn the final stages Foxton backs gave flashes of what they are: capable of by scoring two good tries in quick succession as a result of good work among the backs. For the best part of the game Wanderers were decidedly the better team, and they would have beep unlucky to have lost. As it was they lost three points owing to a man being in front, when with a penalty kick Mackenzie landed ;a beautiful goal from half-way. . .Ths game ended Wanderers H, Foxton 8. ' The respective teams took the field: Wanderers (black). —Ryder, P. Graham, Mackenzie, Bryant, Nicolson, S. Grahahi, W. Parata, T.. Parata, Udy, Skilton, McDonald, Tatana, Eansfield, Knox and McDonnell.
Foxton (yellow).—Procter, Taylor, Robinson, Thompson, Stevenson, Moses, Barnes/Woods, Andrew, Carter, Harrison, McGregor}, Price, Hindu and Huff.
Foxton kicked off against the sun and a strong breeze. Mackenzie gathering it up ran up the line, but a forward pass stayed further progress. Wanderers then, launched ah attack and from a serum in Foxton’s 25, W. Parata went over. Tatana added the major points. The Blacks continued to press during which. P. Graham unsuccessfully attempted to pot a goal from the field. A free kick to Foxton on their own line-failed to give them relief, the Blacks-sweeping down with a passing movement that, again looked dangerous, but after a tussle near Foxton’s line the; latter worked clear and good kicking' by Procter and Taylor carried play down the field only to be returned by a Black dribbling rush tithe 25, wheie Taylor saved by marking. This was followed up by Thompson snapping up the ball and after a good sprint down the field passing to Stevenson, who was collared inside Wanderers' 25. This movement placed the latter on the defensive, but a long kick by Bryant caused play to travel to the other end of the field, where Robinson, by a good kick found the line at half w-ay. Soon after from a kick across field Bryant got possession and beating the opposition scored un der the posts.® Tatana failed to add the two points. Wanderers 8. Foxton nil. At this stage Procter, who had been knocked out earlier in game, retired, he being replaced by Hirini. After play travelled up and down the field, P. Graham sent a pass on to W. Parata; enabling tlie latter to score at the corner. McDonnell took the kickat goil, but. was unsuccessful. Wanderers 11, Foxton 0. Wanderers continued to keep up the pressure, until an exchange of kicks removed play to half way, where from a penalty Mackenzie kicked a beautiful goal, but it was disallowed owing to a man being in front. Shortly before the end of the spell a good effort by S. Graham ■tfas spoilt by a low pass. The spell ended with Foxton on the defensive. Wanderers 11, Foxton nil.
After changing ends play for a time travelled up and down the field, one good movement being made by the Blacks, when W. Parata set his backs in motion and S. Graham put in a ® ne run, and when tackled sent on to Mackenzie, who was collared in Foxton s 25. Foxton worked back, but a dribbling tush carried play back to Foxton’s line where a struggle ensued. A five yards* scrum resulted in Foxton working clear, the latter launching an attack during which Stevenson attempted to drop-kick a goal from the field. Aftei some uninteresting play, 1 oxton’s rearguard got going and in a passing movement in which nearly a their backs handled the ball, TayJoi' went over at the corner. He failed to add the extra points. Wanderers 11, ’ Foxtoa 3. Shortly after Taylor again
got possession and on being tackled, sent a high pass across the field to Robinson, who cleverly accepted and raced over to score Foxton’s second try. Tins time Taylor made no mistake with the kick. Wanderers 11, Foxton 8. These successes gave Foxton new dfe, with the result that they kept the Blacks busy defending their territory, till Ryder with a good lino' kick cleared. A free kick soon after came to Foxton, but from a good angle Tailor failed to draw his team level. The game was now becoming exciting, Foxton opening up the game, the substitute fullback Hirini on one occasion working his way through the opposition, but a forward pass causing a halt. The Blacks then carried play down field, but Moses with a good kick fouud the line well down. Soon after Taylor ]iut in another good run and again. tried a high pass across the field, but on this occasion-he was not successful as Mackenzie intercepted it, and kicking followed it up and was able to reach Hirini at full full back before the latter. got his kick in. A free kick to Wanderers saw Foxton again return to the attack during which Blacks were penalised for off-side, but again Taylor was unsuccessful 'in his attempt to goal. Then through the efforts of Mackenzie the Blacks were able to invade. Foxton’s line, but Andrew cleared and play was removed to midfield. A long kick by Taylor compelled S. Graham to force. Foxton, now had the upper hand, a chance to at least make a. draw of it being lost by a low pass. The game ending Wanderers 11, Foxton 8. Mr J. O’Connor controlled the game.
