REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL.
DANNEVIKJKE CHALLENGE TO « BE PLAYED AT LEVIN.
MAORI-PAKEHA AT OTAKI,
MANAWATU AT SHANNON.
Arrangements for aeveral representative matches were made by the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council on Tuesday. BEBBINGTON SHIELD.
A chaljleliige, for- the Bebbington Shield was received from the Oannevirke .Sub-Union.
Mr Richards (Shannon) suggested that the game be played on a Saturday. .. - After a discussion of various dates, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Procter (Lui Ms.')," seconded by Mr Mitchell (Shannon) that the ■ date of Saturday/ July 27ih, be submitted to the Dannevivke Sub-Unior,
The chairman (Mr Hanran) mentioned thai, lest year, the donor of the Shield K : n and said that games for i&: trcphy should be played in Levin. The Council got over the difficulty last t : iie by xving. ihe Rangitikei game to Foxton. He asked if
members desired to comply >vlth the with of the donor.
Mr McGill (Otaki): I think we shored.
Mr Robinson (iDxtoii): I think so
The chairman! then moved that the match be played in Levin. This was seconded by Mr McGill, and carried.
MAORI-PAKEHA GAM|E. The chairman moved, in accordance with notice, that the resolution setting down the Maori-Fakcha match for Wednesday, June sthj, be rescinded, and that it be played on June 12th. The mover explained that it would be difficult for the players to get together on the Wednesday following the Monday holiday, so. it was thought best that it be held a week later.
The 'motion was seconded by Mr Robinson, aujd cairied. Mr McGill requested that the game be played at Otaki. ' He said he had been asked by quite a number of football supporters there if this could be done. He had understood that it was proposed that the.game be played at Foxton.
Mr Robinson: It was played at,Otaki two years ago.
Mr Mitchell (Shannon) supported Mr McGill's request, saying that Shannon could not get a "gate".'on a Wednesday, and he did not think Foxton could either. , The chairman stated that the trophy had to go round. The Council had to assemble 30 players for this'match. Mr Robinson was agreeable 'o. the match being played at Otaki,"which, a? a Rugby centre, had had a pretty up-and-down career. He thought that this game would encourage Otaki to go on to something better.
The Chairman asked the Otaki delegate if the ground would be in order. Mr McGill replied in the affirmative, but added that if this meeting was of opinion that a better gate could be got at Levin, Foxton or Shannon, he had no objection to the match being allotted to one of those centres. On the other hand, if it was to be put on at Otaki, he would see that it was given due publicity.
*lt Avas decided that the match be' played at Otaki on June 12th. Mr S. Hooper was appointed manager of the Pakeha team and Mr A. Bichards of the Maori team. It was decided that the game commence-' at 2.45 p.m. sharp. The Maoris will go to the Family Hotel, and the Pakehas to the Telegraph Hotel. The respective colours will be: Maoris, red and blue; Pakehas, green and white. x
MANAWATU MATCH,
Tor the riorownenua v. Manawatu match the date of Saturday, June 22nd, was selected. Mr Casey moved that it be played at Shannon. The motion was seconded by Mr Mitchell, who said that Shannon always got the biggest gate for that match. He also referred to the Shannon venue as being handy to Palmerston, with consequent benefit to the attendance.
Mr Robinson: I think Foxton beat you by about £3 for the gate for that match. Shannon held the record until then.
Mr Mitchell: I think that two years ago Shannon topped it. Mr Richards: We put the biggest gate on in two years for any match except a combined match. * Mr Robinson: I thought we topped y.ou off. I know we put in a fiver in to try to. (Laughter). The Chairman: I might draw the Shannon gentleman's, attention to tha fact that Levii> has only been having ,Wednesda,y games when Shannon has .been having all these Saturday games.
Mr Robinson: Will that leave Foxton without a rep. match at all? The Chairman: At present it does.
Mr Robinson: That is pretty hard for two delegates to go back and' tell them.
Mr Meyers (Waikanae): There is Bangitikei to come in.
Mr Robinson; A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and I think Foxton has as much right to the Manawatu match as Shannon has.
The Chairman: Just as much; only it would be aa convenient to us to play Rangitikei at Foxton as anywhere, if they come in. Last year we left the position to Shannon and Foxton to draw jfor; Foxton won in the first place, then we got them to alter it to the Rangitikei match. Mr Heyes (Foxton)-: In that case they should be entitled to this match. Mr MeG-ill suggested that Shannon have the Rangitikei game and Foxton the Manawatu game.
The Chairman: If we have an A and B match, Shannon will suit us best, because we can assemble our players more easily there than at Foxton. I think Foxton might take the risk with the Rangitikei game, like Levin did with the Bush game last year.
Mr Robinson: I would like Shannon
and Foxton to have it too if it "were possible.
•Mr Heyes: What about a spell in each place? (Laughter). Mr Robinson: I would like to toss or draw or put an amendment in for itj I would like to have a sporting ,ehance for it. I can assure you just .about a- £SO gate., Mr ; Heye3: I was going to move, as an amendment, that it be held in Foxton. The amendment,, moved, by Mr Heyes and seconded by Mr Robinson, that the match be played in Foxton, was lost, only the two Fostori delegates voting for it. The motion in favour of Shannon was then carried. .FOXTON- TO HAVE NEXT SHIELD GAME. The Chairman, said that the meeting would be fair to Foxton. He thought would be fair io Foxton. He thought that, in the event of a challenge coming from Rangitikei for the Bebbington Shield, it would be played at Foxton. Mr Procter moved and Mr McGill seconded, that Foxton, be allotted tho Rangitikei game.
Mr Robinson- I think that, in view of the way that Foxtoif are, working, they deserve a rep. match, even if Levin only gets one rop. match. If Otaki and Shannon get a match, Foxton should have one too. He moved, as an amendment, that the Bush or the Rangitikei match, according to which challenge is received first, be played at Foxton.
The amendment ivas seconded by Mr Heyes, and was carried by seven votes to five. •
•With regard to the match between .Foxton and :the Wellington Tramways team, to be played at Foxton on King's Birthday, Mr Heyes mentioned that the Tramways team had been-in the habit of playing Carterton on a fiftyfifty basis with respect to the takingshe did not know whether 50, per cent, went to the home club or the. Union. The Chairman said he believed that there was a, minute authorising this Council to take the 50 per cent, in the case of such games, but he did nor think it had ever been enforced. Mi-. Richards: We should assist our clubs all we can in the way of finance. They generally run out before the season is finished.
Mr Robinson said he had previously moved that the game be played on ia fifty-fifty basis with the Council, but he had been under the impression that the tramwaymen did not expect half the gate. He\ had since heard that they were in need of funds.
Mr McGill: It is-for funds for their band to take part in the contest iii Auckland.
Mr Robinson put in a strong plea for consideration of the Foxton Club, which had worked hard but was still short of finance. He thought that if there-was a bye in the Cup fixtures at any time, the Council should let the Foxton Club have the benefit of it.
The meeting agreed that the Council should abstain from enforcing its claim for 50 per cent, of the ga.'i 3 takings, in the case of the Foxton v. Tramways match.
