"CORRECT CARDS,"
ANOMALIES AT WANGANUI.
The Wanganui Jockey Club has its racebooks printed in Palmerston North, so that it labours under a disadviintag-J in regard to corrections. At the same time the percentage of errors in last week's books was unduly high. "Moturoa," a Taranaki writer, has analysed the books rather thoioughly and finds some peculiarities to say the least. The pedigreed contained in the 30-odd pages would make a Bruce Lowe enthusiast weep, he writes. Royal Acre's danwas given as "Euroclydon"; Flying Binge's dam as "Cushia"; Waiplane became ""War Plane ";_ Broxt was by the mare Ambitious, out of imported stallion, Arrow-smith; Fallow was an "aged colt','; and Latakia didn't have an age at all! Joke Form was "true to label," being the progeny of two well-known Taranaki sires, Moiioforni' and Wairiki, while Whcnuatonga, Naselic, and Good Cheer were all of the "no age" division. In the second race, the Hack steeples, the reader was informed that Vexatious was "re-handicapped," which she wasn't; but Highwayman, who won at Hawera since Wanganui. weights were declared, appeared to have dodged further Impost. Pikimai's dam was given as "Sylvia Park," and Royal Elm's as "Gravitation." Pippin became "Pippen"; Lethe "Tethe," and Patroon "Pat-room." Trainer P. Garvey was a person of no fixed abode. To fill in a blank space a notice was .inserted informing patrons that a change window wais "adjacent" to the 10s windows.
In the Wanganui Steeples, certainly, St. Clements became "St. Clement V .and Wharncliffe lost his final "e," but the Hitter omission was squared up by giving Polydamon an extra "1." Trainer T. H. Giilett also received another "e," bringing him into line with tho maker of the safety razors. But things Were now running smoothly, and the Kaitoke Hurdle Race was marred only by a " Pollyjlamon," Hermice," an ungraceful corruption of « ' Kermia," a " Eippon Abbey," an "Isabell," and a "Scrab." A small field in the Century Hurdles did not give much opportunity for errors, but Glengariff's dam suffered a change to. " Gurdenoy," and Boniform looked quite effeminate when written , "Bonnvford." Rossendale lost an "s," but Ripon Abbey again gained a "p," so what's the odds! The Connolly Handicap; might have been passed over Toddy" McDon-* aid had not kicked up a dust abour' Henna, a mars that he has owned for some months, being credited to Mr-P. .J. Carmont, and Mr McDonald declined to give Metcalf any colour* but his own—no matter what the book* said! Other, trifles were -then noticed, Limond (evidently a new sire, and known only to a few), being given as "Lamond," Greyspear as "Crepspear," Gasbag as "Gas'Bag," and another "Pollydamon" thrown in for good weight. \ -.•',= - The. next race of the day was flawless but for a "War Plane," a "Holly royd," a,nd a "Llanally." -.The .colour, .and sex'of that, well-known mare, Joy Bird, was omitted as of no consequence. The second day's card saw many of the abovo errors corrected, but the practice of lightly attaching pink gummed slips with names of horses omitted when the bobk. was compiled caused rude lemarks. A mere "Lora Quex," and a "Valeon" showed that the.compilers were determined to strike a new note, but on the whole the second day's production showed that somebody with a passing knowledge of horses and their nomenclature had. been busy on the Friday. ■.'.'■
