SPORTING NOTES.

OTAKI MEETING NEXT WEEK. (By Silken Rein.”) Worth, Watching. Dobbin’s performances in other seasons' have been very irregular, but during the present year he has been more consistent. The fact that he ran fourth bn the opening day at the recent Wanganui meeting and followed by running a close third to Benzora and Keddar in the concluding race of the fixture suggests his turn is now nearly due. With 7.11 the Quin Abbey gelding reads to possess an excellent chance if allowed to fulfil his engagement at Otaki.

Money Mint. During a race at a recent meeting in the Wairarapa district Money Mint showed a surprising burst of speed to finish a good third to Bernera and Waterspear. He raced in the nomination of Hon. T. M. Wilford, who once scored a substantial win with Botowhexo at Otaki, and as Money Mint has not the form to warrant any outstanding support, it is just possible that lie has improved and the popular owner may again see his colours bring a good price at the same fixture. He has the Paper Money gelding engaged in the Waitohu Hack Handicap. Modern Being Schooled.

' Modern, who is being schooled over the hurdles at Trentham, has been nominated for the jumping events at Otaki. The aged daughter of Gold Soult — Velour raced at the Nelson and Marlborough fixtures recently and at the former meeting filled third position to Ronald and Miss Mercia in a mile race. In a race over the same distance on the opening day at Marlborough she improved !to Isedosid position behind Kiriana with Maui third. On the following day she got up to share honours with Smithereens in a seven furlong race. Modern’s only other placing this season rvas a third to Joy Bird and Bonhomme at the Otaki November meeting, but her recent racing, which is much improved, suggests that she is a possibility at Otaki if her jumping is right. She has been allotted 9.10 for the opening event on the first day. Jumping May Suit Sneerer.

The local trained Sneerer, whose flat racing has been anything but successful is nominated to contest the Tararua Hurdles at Otaki on June Ist. As some very good jumpers have come from the same family, it is reasonable to expect that Sneerer may yet prove a payable position. His full sister, Cybele, who is two years his senior, raced well at Wanganui, but without success. Her form at Waikato,•however, was particularly good, for on the first day she finished a creditable fourth to Wiltshire, Star Comet and Vivo, and on the second day of the meeting won the Raglan Hurdles from Katvini, Star Comet, Uralla and ten other starters. Pale Star. When racing in weak company Pale Star enjoyed a good run of successes in hack races early in the season, winning three on end. Prior to joining the jumpers the Tribulation gelding contested twenty-two races this season for four firsts, two seconds and four .thirds. It is understood that Pale Star, who has been taken in hand bv F. Higgott Of Otaki, is slioaving distinct promise at the game and with 9.7 may be - troublesome in the opening event at the forthcoming meeting. The same trainer is also represented by Pesliwa, who has met fair share of success in that branch of the sport. To Try the Obstacles.

Tresham, Avho in earlier years raced prominently on the flat, is to be tried as a jumper. He has been accorded a nomination in both the Tararua Hurdles and RaukaAva Cup at Otaki and if he takes on the former e\ r ent, it will be interesting to see hoAV he shapes at the game. Taking a line through his early performances there is every reason to believe he will make good, though he cannot be expected tc Avin yet among a field of more experienced jumpers. Won Twice at Last Meeting.

Sir. Moment, who started the season so Avell last year by Avinning on both days at Otaki is again nominated foi the jumping events. On that form it seems that the aged son of Merry Moment—Merrie Rose races best Avhen fresh and as he has not* been unduly penalised, the opinion is that if he is sent to the post, he 'will go near to winning the opening event on Saturday Aveek. Red Bank, it has to be admitted, is a better horse than he Avas at this time last year, but the difference in poundage is decidedly in Sir Moment’s favour. Improving. If his Wanganui form is at all reliable Le Champ is a hack runner Avho should get on the Avinning list shortly. He finished fourth in the second division of the Purua Hack and started on the second day to run a \ r ery creditable third to Havering and St. Melba in the FareAvell Hack. In that e\'ent he was sent out fourteenth favourite, but if started at Otaki, where he has been accorded a nomination, the Acre gelding is not likely to be at such a long price as Avhen he strikes good form he is a dangerous one in short hack races. Odds and Ends.

Whisogne, who is nominated for the principal event at Otaki, finished second in the hurdles at the same fixture; last year. Grand Acre is improving and should Avin again soon. Henna was not well when she raced

at Wanganui and finished last but one. If she recovers sufficiently she may be taken to* Otaki to contest the RuakaAva Cup. Bon Acre has not been seen out for a AA'hile but the full-brother to Borsalene shoAved distinct promise in some of his engagements earlier in the year. He is due 'to race again at Otaki. Bank Note has come doAvn a good deal in poundage, being allotted 7.6 in the Waitohu Hack. If he was in as good order as when he ran second to Inflame at Bulls Avith he would have to be considered in his Otaki en-, gagements. \
