THIRD GRADE COMPETITION. ‘

WERAROA II v. SHANNON 4

The game between Weraroa and Shannon winch'torfk place on the Mira-, nui field on Saturday, opened in fine weather, the 151111, being hidden by clouds. Shannon (red) won the toss and elected to play against, the sun. Soon after the kick-off, the ganm resolved, itself into a forward tussl ', the Shannon forwards having a slight advantage for the first few minutes. As the game proceeded the Wevaroa (black and white) pack came more into the picture and after the first ten minutes showed a decided superiority, which they maintained to 'the' end. The, visiting pack combined well. The first try resulting from combined'forward work. Roe (full-back) converted with a fine kick. It was essentially a for ward <gam.e, owing to the state of the field, in which cattle had been grazing recently, and oiling to the length of the.' grass. There was, therefor;, no opportunity for individual back play, though the backs combined well, producing some line passing rushes. A feature of the day’s play was the spectacular try by Butler, the black and white contain. Following .-a scrimmage on the home line the ball came out from the melee to be promptly snapped up by Butler, who, with head down, charged through the red pack to dive over the line with, the whole Shannon pack 011 top of him. Grace (wing-three-quarter) failed to convert with a very lino "kick, which missed its objective by the smallest of ■ margins. Weraroa’s (third) try resulted from a fine passing rush by the backs, Roe failing with a fairly easy kick. There was no outstanding player.ill'the visiting rearguard, though Roe placed a reliable game at full-back, his 'linekicking being very effective. Shannon,' who fielded a much stronger side than that which visited Tokomaru the previous Saturday, extended the visitors to their utmost, their outstanding player being T. Spencer (wing threequarter). Shannon’s only score was a dropped goal by Mabey. When no side was signalled, the score-was Wevaroa. 11, Shannon 4. Tries for Weraroa were procured by Butler, Grace, and Galloway. Roe. converted one try. The championship table now reads':

The game between Tokomaru and Weraroa, next Saturday will , show which is the stronger in the first.,round.
