HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report on the month of April was submitted to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday by the engineer (Mr. J. T. M. Brewster) Tokomaru Riding. A coating of maintenance, metal has been placed on the Makerua to Tokomaru section of fhc Main Highway. Maintenance work has been carried out on the roads in Tokomaru township. Maintenance metal- has been placed on Okuku and Victoria Roads. Cleaning of water channels has been undertaken on Kingstone Road. The contractor has made good progress with the erection of Albert Road bridge. Wirokino Riding. Maintenance metal has been placed on the Levin-Shannon and Levin-Fox-ton Main Highways. The grader has been frequently employed on these roads. A start has been made with the re-construction of, portion of the Levin-Fox ton Main Highway. The short piece of unpaved highway immediately south of the Ohau River has been prepared for a sealing coat of bitumen. It is my intention to try and have this section completed with one coat; before the winter. box culvcrt lias been put in on -the Kukutauaki Road. Maintenance work generally has been carried out in this riding. Otaki Riding.
The metalling of portion of the Waikawa Beach Road is nearing completion. The r.oad grader has been at work on South Manakau and Atkins’ Roads. A quantity of maintenance metal has been placed on tile North Manakau Road. A number of stone drains have been placed under the shoulders of the pavement south of Manakau, to endeavour to drain the water that is now coming through the surface of the pavement. The overflow culvert at the Otaki Bridge is practically completed. A start has been made with the painting of the Otaki Bridge. Te Horo Riding. Faseining of the sand cutting south
of Te Horo lias been completed. The corner opposite Mr. Burgess* property on the Waikanae Beach Road has been widened. Metal patching has been carried out on the Reikorangi Road. Sundry Requirements. 6r. Catley said he had heard a lot of complaints about the state of the water-races, but they had better be held over for the new Council to deal with. Lindsay and Fairfield Roads were very much out of repair. Ihc metal was there, and only wanted grading in. . The engineer: The loose metal there is in patches, and there is not onougn fo grade in. Cr. Catley: We have a big balance 'at the ciid of the year, and that is no good if our roads are not up to standard. Old Coach Road. Cr. Ryder asked what the engineer was going to do with the Old Coach Road by Lee's. The engineer: Put some metal on it. We are finishing up the £7O granted last year, and hope to get some more this vear. Flooding at Mangaone. Cr. Jensen said there was no reference in the engineer's- report to Mr. •Ellis’ - complaint regarding the waterrace at Mangaone. He asked if anything had been done in the matter. The engineer stated that he had not yet had an opportunity of investigating the position. Te Horo Beach Road. Cr. Jensen called attention to the need for some repairs on Te Horo Beach Road. Tic stated that the road had been very dangerous for many years, and it ‘seemed to be getting worse year by year. He was quite sure that in flood times this was one o£ the worst pieces of road in To Horo riding, and he hoped that something would be done to it in the near future. The engineer's report was adopted.
