SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The last meeting during tho present Council's term of office was held on Tuesdav■evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr B." Butt) and Crs T. C. Thwaites, B. Downes, E. Hook, Jas. Curran, jun., and Jas. Curran sen. Apology for absence were received from Crs Hyde and W. H. Gunning. RENTAL OF DOMAIN.
The secretary of the Horowhenua Rugby<Distriet ; Council wrote stating that he had been instructed by his Committee to ask the Council to reconsider the amount of rental to be paid for the use of the Domain during the-football season and to permit the Shannon representatives to appear ait the next Council meeting in support of the request that the Domain be granted for a rental of eight pounds for the season 1929. The letter stated that last 'season the gate receipts from club games at Shannon amounted to £34 Ms 6d. This season a fall-ing-off is to be expected as ; the Miranui Club will not be taking part in the" competition. The 'Town Clerk stated that tne charge was £lO last season and he had written to the Secretary of the Rugby Council to this effect, but the latter still persisted in stating that it was £*>• Cr. Downes: When they play a rep. game'here they get a record gate, yet they want the ground for less money. Rather thai, see any reduction made he would sooner pay something to help the local Club by way of improving the ground. Councillors were in accord with or. Downes' idea, it being pointed out that the District Council contributed nothing to th'e local Club to assist them in improving he ground. ' It was decided on the motion of U\ Downes: "That the charge stand as ■ it • is and anything the local Club reciuires the Council will assist. ' SHANNON-FOXTON BRIDGE. From the District Engineer advising that the Manawatu County have agreed to accept control of the new Shannon-Foxton bridge as from the Ist April. v , ~ ... Cr. Curran jun., said he would like to move that the Manawatu County Council, the controlling body, be written to asking that the bridge and road be officially opened. The motion on being put to the meeting was earned. APPLICATION GRANTED. . An application was received from A. Simes, Sbeebari Street for permission to -use the unfeneed portion of the Pound as a metal 'dump. Should the Council be agreeable he would be prepared to lease same at £1 per annum —Granted. mnAA _ BOY SCOUT TROOP. , A letter was received from Mr P. W jßass, who is endeavouring to form a Boy Scout troop in Shannon, stating that from information received the correct procedure in forming a troop is for a public meeting to be called at which it is decided to form a troop and a committee of at least five adults elected, the committee to control lie troop. The writer asked that the Council call the necessary meeting. The Council, while, expressing sympathy with the nroject, decided that the matter be left over for the uieom inc Council to deal with. RANGER'S REPORT. The ranger (J. Swindlehurst) reported that since his last report he had found six cows wandering which were claimed bv their owner.—Received. ROADMAN'S REPORT. The roadman (F. Haley) reported that during the month they have car.ted 83 yards metal on to Margaret, Ballance Streets, Plimmcr Terrace, and Main North Road. This metal, was obtained from Mr T. Ingley owing to there being too much water in the creek. Had grader over road_ from Jboundary to boundary twice. Inspected pipe line and .galleries and had water mains scoured, which were found to be iif good order. • During the tarring season we have top-dressed ana laid down 75 chains of footpaths, consisting of 22 chains of new work and 53 chains top dressed. We are now waiting on tar from Dannevirke to do the work between the Post Office and Andrew's corner. Will require good clean sand for this •work. J. Conchie has been engaged widening and filling in on cemetery road. The road is now 16 feet wide. Have planted willows half way down the side to prevent further slips. On the motion of Cr. Curran, jun., it was decided to purchase a truck of good clean sand from Ohau. The report was adopted: RENEWAL OF LICENSES.
A renewal of license was granted Abraham and Williams for sa'leyards and to Franks and Christie for three petrol pumps. The ,renewal of licenses, for the Pariah Hall, Druids' Hall and Laurvig's Hall were held over until certain improvements, as instructed by the Health Officer, are carried out. BOROUGH LEASES.
The following tenders were accepted for the lease for 12 months of borough sections recently advertised: — Section 289, Vance Street, Mr A. H. Morgan, 1/- per week and rates; Section 322, Nathan Terrace, Mr J. Hoidon, £1 2s 6d per year and rates. JSTo tenders were receive! for Section 340, Nathan Terrace. Cr. Curran, jun., asked if anything had been done about letting the section adjoining the Cemetery. On being informed that nothing had been -done, he recommended that tenders be called for the leasing of it, pointing out that the lessee would have to fence it on one side ancTkeep the existing fences in good order.—lt was decided to leave the letting of the section to the incoming Council. GENERAL. Cr. E. Hook drew the attention of • -the Road Committee to a bad hole on the road in the cutting in front of Mr E. Carter's property, Thompson Street. In its present state it was causing great inconvenience to traffic
to and front Buckley.—The Roadman was instructed to have it attended to.
Or. Thwaites, chairman of the Buildign Committee, reported thaJt during the tarring of the footpath in front of the Council Chambers, heavy rain that came on, had splashed the tar up on to the front of. the building and there had been a certain amount of blistering. As a result the committee had arranged to have the front of the building painted. On the old portion of the building a certain amount of the iron wanted i.enewing and he had been informed by the caretaker that the building was leaking in two places—Left to the Building Committee with power to act. €r. Curran, sen., pointed out that the main drains had not been cleaned out this year and those on Foxton Road and Sheehan Street were in a bad way.—lt was decided to call tenders for cleaning out these two drains, also Stansell's drain from Burling's woolshed to the railway line. Cr. Curran jun., said that the plots having become overgrown with docks and weeds the Beautifying Committee had put a man on to clean them up.
