MATCH AT SHANNON. The first match of the season to b played in Shannon took place oir Sat unlay afternoon when the Shannoi juniors met- a mixed team from th Palmerston North Athletic Clubs. Tie local lads put up a very creditable per forma nee by playing only fourteen mei until a few minutes before*the call ol time and defeating the visitors by 1( ■ points to S. From the kick-off Newman made a fine attempt to score, but w r as stopped on the line. The whistle for half time sounded shortly afterwards.

On resuming Athletic again pressed, but Mabey sent the ball back to half way. Following a line out Puti getting possession, got across the line to seoie a try. The attempt to'goal failed. Once more the Athletic attacked only to be forced back by a-dribbling rush by the. Shannon .forwards, which took play to the half way line. Play from now on traversed up and down the field, with Athletic making strenuous efforts to get through. Finally they ran over on the corner, the try being unconverted. .The game ended soon afterwards. Shannon 10, Athletic 8.“
