CARS SENSATIONAL FALL.
SAVED FROM FAff AL DROP WITH TOUR PASSENGERS BY WIRE FENCE.
Law's Hiil, Ihakara, on which the highway to Palmerston takes a number of turns, has been the scene of frequent accidents,. which appear to have developed an increasing ratio thi3 year. The latest, which occurred shortly after 10 o'clock last night, involved the narrow escape of four persons from probable death, from which they were literally separated by a wire fence. A party of Levin people were returning from the Salvation Army harvest festival at Shannon, the car being driven by the officer of the Levin corps, Ensign Blaikie, and the other occupant 3 being two ladies and a gen- , tleman. , ' Owing to the engine stopping, the car went over the bank an.cf fell against the fence, where it was hald by the wires from a drop of about 200 feet. When the occupants had recovered from their shock, they walked to Mr R. Law's residence and aroused Mr Law, who accompanied them back to the scene of the mishap to see what could be done towards recovering the car. Soon afterwards another car arrived from Shannon, this being a tbreesoater driven by Mr C. Fox, of Wellington, manager of the District Poultry Farmers' Association, who, with two residents of the Levin district, was returning, from a meeting. As a result of their .efforts the first car was hauled up to the road, the rescuing party using their own car for the hauling power and wire borrowed from a fence to form a tow-line, and another line which was connected to the oppo site fence to take the weight of the disabled car in caso the first wire sn'ould break. A small by-road afforded space for the leading car to work, Mr Laws acting as driver. After tho fallen vehicle had been restored to its position on the road, it was tested and found to run all right, the only dam age apparently being to the body. By this time, it was midnight, and the Adjutant again took the wheel and head <d for Levin, the other car following closely behind-until Arapaepae Road was reached, after which the ladies proceeded to Levin without further mishap, feeling very gateful both for their escape from a serious fate and the recovery of the car through th. 3 energy and resource of their helpers.
