ROADMAN'S REPORT. The roadman (F. Haley) reported as follows: —Havje carted, 25 yards of metal on to Plimmer Terrace. The footpaths in Ballance Street have been tar-sealed from Verm to Margaret Streets, also in Venn iStreet from Ballance Stre*et to Vance Street. A start has been made with the second coat pi tar on Ballance Street footpath. He did not think this work would be ;. success as the tar is no good. During the dry weather he had received complaints about the water supply. He 2iad therefore inspected the creek above the intake and emptied the reservoir and scoured out all the mains, but found nothing to warrant complaint.-*. The weed killer U3ed on the side -if ■the road from the Monument to the station gate seems to be having a good effect. He would like the spray use 1 on that portion of the road from the station gate to the Fire Station, as there is a lot of growth there. The rubbish 'ha"S been collected and carted to the dump. It was decided to grant the requcs: for a further purchase of weed killer. Cr. Curran, sen., referring to the metal supply said that aft present then?. was thousands of yards of metal i.i the creek, and an endeavour should be made to get some of it out. Cr. Downes agreed, stating that the foreman had been employed on the footpaths, but it was open for anyone to get metal out as the Couneil wiL want it all. He thought it should be a recommendation to the incoming Council that the roadman be kept on the dray and not be taken away to do footpath work, etc., and that a third man be employed for sueh work. While on the question of roads, he drew attention to the state of the Cemetery road, stating... that the filling was breaking away. He said there was no immediate danger, but if they .had much wet weather there might be. He thought wandering cattle had helped to damage the road. He suggested putting willoAvs down to make a face to prevent the filling bVcaking away. ■ Cr- Curan, jun., pointed out that if willow trees ware put in they would have to, .fence them off, as. wandering stock'would soon have them eaten off. ':'■■ Cr. Hyde suggested that the Beautifying Committee and Roads Committee, com'bine ad kill two birds with one stone by fencing the road from Thompson/. Street to the cutting and then plant as avenue' of trees. (-Or.. Downes agreed with the suggeo; iiori, aaying that in the meantime hu
would get the foreman to look over the road with a view to putting in some filling to make the road safe. He' again pointed out that there was no immediate danger. Referring to the tar being used on Ballance Street footpath, the foreman had predicted would not be a success, Cr. Downes said he thought the foreman was inclined to be prejudiced against this particular tar. He himself thought good results would attained. This matter was left to the Roads Committee to deal with.
