OTAKI LITERARY SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Otaki Literary and Society was held in the Druids' Hall on Thursday, when there was a fair attendance. Mr. L. G. Lowry (President) occupied the chair.
After, the confirming of the minutes Mass Wood (treasurer) submitted her balance-sheet which showed a small credit balance.
In answer to a question Mt. Lowry ■stilted that £4 10s of the expenses had been paid for the use of the hall, this being two'•years' rent. The balance-sheet was adopted. Mr. Lowry then asked for the election of a President, and on being nominated said that he regretted very much being unable to accept. Others were suggested but declined nomination, and Mr. Lowry stated that if the public did not want the Society it could not be helped. He, personally, was willing to do his best, and devote time for its welfare. The club had to have moral, as well as> financial, assistance, and if this was not forthcoming the sooner it went forth to the public the better. It would be, he pointed out, another retrograde step for Otaki if the club was allowed to lapse, but evidently there was nothing else for it. He would 1 help, but he could not accept the Presidency, especially as he expected to be away a good deal. Last year the club had been a success and all members had been a happy family; everything had proved successful, and a credit, not only to Otaki but to the Dominion. If no support was to be forthcoming it would be better to have a convivial time in their tyra homes.
The question of holding the competitions was discussed, and it was decided that owing to lack of support to abandon them for the year. The election of officers was proceeded with and resulted as follows: President, Mr. W. Downio; vice-presi-dents, Mrs. Allan, Miss Mills and Mr. A. Savell; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. Gillespie; committee, Messrs Lowry and Allan, and Mesdames . Savell, Cooksley and Olliver; hon!" auditor, Mr. M. H. Ayre (re-cleeted). ' A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Ayre for his past services, also to other officers and committee who worked so well last year.
It was decided that the committee meet in a fortnight's time and draw up the syllabus for the year with a view to making an early start. Mr. Lowry thanked all who had worked last year to make the club such a success, but .regretted there were not more members. All associated with the club had worked well, and he hoped they would continue as a happy family during the coming year, and have many pleasant evenings.
