SIX DAYS' ANNUAL LEAVB.

The Works Committee recommended to the Horowhenua County. Council on Saturday that the permanent surfacemen be granted annual, leave for six consecutive days in addition to the statutory holidays; such leave to b? arranged to suit the convenience of the Engineer..

The chairman stated that the, recommendation brought th 3 holidays up to 14 working di>ys, the other, holidays being New Year'? Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Labour Day, Kiug's Birthday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. v.tGr. Gimbletl asked if the Engineer could not free a certain number of workmen betwveu Christmas and New Year, work being to a certain extent broken during {hat rime. If this could be done there would be a smaller charge on the Cou..cy than if the six days were given at other times. , The Engineer said that circumstances' altered, cases, and he could not state definitely whether this could be done. The position was governed by weather and various other conditions, and the recommendation had been worded "to suit the convenience of the Engineer.." The chairman stated that a petition had been 3,?nt 1c .him two or three days before the Christmas holidays, but he had not been able to d 6 anything with it. at that time. Some of the men wanted to get consecutive holidays between Christmas and' New Year..

Cr. Jensen stated that the Committee's intention was to grant six- consecutive days some time during the year, though it was not workable to have the surfacemen all off during one period. It would be best to let th„> recommendation stand as it was,, and leave the arranging of the holidsys to the Engineer. 'J he recommendation was adopted, Cr. Catley dissenting.
