INFLUENZA SCOURGE.
OUTBREAKS IN BRITAIN. MANY DEATHS. (Published in the “Daily Mail.”) LONDON, January 29. There has been a sudden increase in cases of influenza, in schools and among the public, in three widely-separated London districts — Poplar, and Marylebone. There have been 62 deaths out of 400 admissions to Walton Hospital in the last nine days, and 57 member;, of the hospital staff are ill. Four doctors of the London County Council’s Public Health Department and many other employees, are absent The epidemic is more severe in Liverpool, where it is supposed to have come from American shipping.
The high death rate is due to the serious condition of the patients when admitted. A number of Liverpool schools have been closed, whilst the Edinburgh Corporation is inoculating its tramfvnymen. Influenza of a mild type is spread ing in Hungary (where there are over 500,000 cases in one comity), in Yugoslavia, and in Spain, where the Premier, General de Rivera, is a victim. “SAME OLD BUG.” MELBOURNE, January 29. The chairman of the Victorian Health Commission stated to-day that there was no escape from the germ of influenza. It was among people all the time, and could be carried by healthy people. The germ which had attacked America and was now assailing Eritain was flic same old bug as had caused deaths in Australia from time to time, but for some inexplicable reason it was more virulent at some times than at others. Dr. Robertson said that it would be futile for Australian quarantine authorities to take drastic action to preveiu the spread of infection here. “You would have to boil everyone who came into the country,” he said.
