NIGHTDRESS CASE

A case that is large enough to take either a nightie or pyjamas, and deeoi ative without being so trimmed that ii simply hates the iaundry, is a present certain of a welcome. But be original ii> your embroidery! Break away from the conventional flower posy, and applique a fascinating candle gaily aflame. For the case itself get a piece of Knen about 40 inches long by a bare 16 inches wide: tangerine-orange makes a lovely background for a dark beech-brown candlestick and its w T hite candle. With this use a narrow bind of orange in a deeper flame shade, which will also serve for a realistic candle-flame. Candle-wick and lettering match the candle stick. The bottom of the candlestick should come 2 inches from the flap edge. Cut out the candlestick carefully and tack it to the flap. Buttonhole all round with matching silk, but as you work hold a thick strand of silk along the candlestick edge to be caught down 'with your stitching. The candle itself is a 31in. strip of linen tape, £in. wide, buttonholed in white. Cut the flame from the same material as the bind, buttonhole it in place, and use a single straight stitch of embroidery cotton to match for elch of the eleven candle rays. Work the lettering in brown satin-stitch.

If you can get binding tape in the colour you want,, so much the better; if not, cut inch-wide strips of linen; the strips will be about 3-} yards. Double the bind, turn in the raw edges to face, and slip over the raw edge of the case material, machining along the turned-in edge. Do the top edge or" the -pocket part first—the end farthest from the embroidery—then turn this end lrp to form a pocket 12 inches deep, and tack the sides together and ftiiish.
