CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR.

MAYOR GIVES SUPPER,

At the conclusion of the Council -meeting last evening, the Mayor (Mr E. 'Butt) entertained the councillors, borough employees and News representative to supper to commemorate the commencement of the New Year; A pleasant time was spent, during which -a number of toasts were honoured.

Cr. Downes in proposing the health of the Mayor said (hey were all pleasccl to see. him. looking his old -self again after his recent illness and hoped that, he would be spared to preside at the Council for many years to come. Under his leadership the Council had worked harmoniously and they had spent a happy time. He then called for cheers for the Mayor and Mayoress which were heartily given. The Mayor in returning thanks for the kind remarks and the hearty way in which the health of Mrs Butt and himself had been honoured said that in Shannon he thought it would be impossible to get a better body of men to represent the- citizens. Each councillor; had done his duty. Some -were working men who only got half a day off during the week, which time they gave to borough affairs, and often their Sundays. This alone showed that they had the interests of the borough at heart. Other toasts honoured ■ were the -‘King,’’ “The Ladies,” ” Councillors and absent councillors,” ü ßorough Employees,” the Press and the new Government. A pleasant evening being brought to a close by all joining hands and singing “Auld Lang Syne.”
