ABUNDANT ATTRACTIONS FOR EXHIBITORS AND PUBLIC. ENTRIES CLOSE ON TUESDAY ’ NEXT. In less than three weeks the annual show of the Horowlienua A. and P. Association will again be in progress, the dates being Tuesday and Wednesday, January 29th and 30th. The entries close with the secretary, Mr F. Nicholson, P.O. Box 32, Levin on Tuesday next. . 1 " I _ ... The Show is a comprehensive exhibition,-! with sections devoted to horses of various types, dairy cattle, purebred cattle of the leading breeds, ■ sheep in both fat and pedigree classes, and pigs in various divisions.. In addition there are ring competitions, sheep-dog trials,/ _ steer-riding contest, guessing competitions, and a motoTeyeWrace by local amateurs. The Aa/g section is a unit in itself, housed % its own pavilion, and is generally one of the outstanding features of the Show;. X Six classes are provided for horses and two for ponies, and. a championship is offered in -each division. The competitions are varied and. shpuld evoke much interest. On the first, day they number ten in horse’ events, and besides these .there will be the first steer-riding contect, motor-cycling, and a. potato race in motor-cars. Four events of major importance -are included in the second day’s ring programme. ; They are the open? steeplechase jumping, open hunters’ competition, farmers’ trotting. race, and district jumping competition (open conditions). The other .items include . a pony race, motor events, steer-riding contest, and the sheep-dog trials. The dairy cattle division consists of eleven classes, with .a trophy and a special prize, for most pointy besides substantial individual prizes. A champion ribbon is also offered in this division by the association. In purebred cattle provision is made for _ five breeds, and a cup will be awarded to the best cow or heifer in milk in the division. The Jerseys are allotted thirteen classes, and a cup, is offered for most points, while special prizes are available in several of the classes. This year the N.Z. Ayrshire Cattle Breeders’ Association challenge shield has been .allptted to the Levin Show-, and with it & trophy valued ait £1 Is. The winner will have his name engraved on the , shield, which is to be held for twelve months, and the association is prepared to exhibit the shield at the various show's. The Ayrshire classes total twelve. Friesians are represented by ten' classes, registered Milking Shorthorns by ten, 'and Rod Dolls by jfieven. fecial prizes are offered by the N.Z. Milking Shorthorn Association.*

Prominent ambng the trophies in the sheep section is the Davies Memorial Cup, a perpetual challenge prize, which has been contested from 1918 onwards. It is given as a points prize in fat' sheep and lambs. There are nine classes for fat sheep, six for .fat lambs, two for gift sheep, firm farmers’ classes, and a separate division of four classes for lambs. In the purebred division competition is stimulated by the Stratton Perpetual Challenge Cup for most points in purebred Romneys. The classes in Romneys .number eight. Southdcwns have nine classes, and Lincolns six.

Pigs form an interesting section, with attractive rewards. Each year the Ketobell Silver Cup is competed for on the basis of most points gained m the section, and the winner receives the assoieiation’s certificate. The Manawatu-Oroua branch of the N.Z. Pig Breeders’ Association offers two silver cups for the most points in Berkshire and Tamworth classes at the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Feilding and Marton Shows during the 1928-29 season. A cup is provided by Mr J. A. Russell, of Palmerston North, for most points gained in the Berkshire section at this Show by farmers, residing in the Horowhenua- County. The forthcoming Show will be the venue of the contest for the Perrett Challenge Shield for most 'points in the Berkshire section; the winner to hold the trophy for twelve months and to receive a gold medal valued at £5 5s donated by .the N.Z. Pig Breeders’ Association. 1 The classes comprise eleven for Berkshires, eight for Tarnworths, six for Large Whites, six for Large Blacks, three for crossbreds, and two for porkers and baconers

As the season has been a a favourable one for general farming, there is good reason to hope that record en trios will be received for this year’s Show. .
