TONING UP THE HERD
Can milking cows be toned up with the aid of artificial sunlight? was a novel point at an address on electricity as applied to agriculture, given by Mr. A. C. Cameron Brown at the Moulton Farm Institute, Northampton, recently. The principal, Mr. W. A. Stewart, raised the question during the discussion, and said that toward the end of February or the beginning of March farmors had a certain amount of trouble with their milking cows, apparently because they had got to a .low vitality at the end of the winter, through lack of sunshine. Would it be possible where a farm had an electrical supply to give the cows the ultra-violet rays? Mr. B. W. Gothard, A.M.LE.E. said he had never heard of the theory of applying the ultra-violet rays treatment to cows, but he thought it was quite feasible, and the cost would bo next to nothing. Hens laid move eggs, and more cheerfully, if an electric, light was placed in the laying pensr and at the Zoo the monkey enjoyed the ultra-violet rays.
