COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS.

REPORT ON RIDING MATTERS.

The County Engineer (Mr. J. T. M. Brewster) reported to the Horowhenua County Council, on Saturday, as follows, concerning riding and general matters: —

Tokomaru Riding.—Several slips* came down on to the Shannon East' Road and wero removed. I have inspected the footpaths leading to the railway overbridge and it is my intention to repair these with crusher fines, when pavement metal for the Main Highway is being crushed. Wirokino Riding. —• Maintenance ' metal has been placed on Wallace, Lindsay, Heatherlea East and Muhunoa West Roads. The approach, to: Kohitane Road will be put in order when metal is again being put on the Heatherlea-Koputaroa Road. Fairfield Road will receive attention during the next two weeks. General maintenance is being carried out on the roads in this Riding as required. Otaki Riding.'—The roads in this Riding are in fair order and only routine work has been carried out. Plan 3, specifications and estimates for the , forming and metalling of portion of Waikawh Beach Road have been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval, and as soon as I receive the necessary authority, the work will be commenced.

Te Horo Riding. maintenance work has been carried out in this Riding. • A flood on November 10th washed away the northern approach to a bridge on the Ngatiawa Road. This bridge has been repaired, which necessitated the construction of new end sheathing and wing walls. Several slips occurred on the Mangaono Road/ (Reikorangi end)these wei-e promptly attended to and traffic .was not unduly blocked. Slips also occurred on the Otaki Gorge Road, and have been cleared away. A quantity. of rmetal patching has been carried out on .the Mangaono Read (Te Horo).

General. —The Acme Crusher has broken down, which necessitated the urgent ordering of a new jaw stock. This is the crusher referred to in my report of last month. A Case tractor has been ordered and delivery will be given as soon .as the crusher is repaired, when a trial run will be made. The report was adopted.
