SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONTHLY MEETING. / ■ Last evening the above meeting nas held in the schoolroom. Present: Messrs A. E. Hyde (chairman), A. Hill (secretary), A. Coates, C. Bailsman, A. : ‘ Riahards, T. Ingley, W. Christian, and A. T. White (headmaster). ' DENTAL CLINIC. The secretary of the Wellington Educate , Board wrote acknowledging the committee’s cheque for £J3 Is od, being their share towards the cost ot the erection of a dental clinic at Shannon. He asked that they send -by i e turn, the letters they have sent and have received about the clinic. Ho stated that it is unfortunate the Board was not informed how far forward these preparations were, as it has already invited tenders for the addition to tne school and he could not find that- they had previously requested the 'clinic to be-included in the specifications. He pointed out that, there was such a pressure at present for actual school accommodation that it is by no means easy to introduce new work ahead of authorities existing. He added.. tliat the Board is very please#* to learn of the forwardness of their pre- . A further letter frorh the iSecrdlary staled that he had gathered from Mr Hunter, head of the Dental Department, that the committee have been in touch with that Department. lie had explained to him, however, the Board was ignorant of the committee’s very praiseworthy, indentions until receipt of their letter. He had explained to the eommittee' , s chairman, vy.lio had ealled upon him, that it would/be quite a mistake to defer the work' in the school until arrangements were made for the clinic. The Board was now in touch with the Education Department, and will forward the matter as much as possible. v I he chairman said there was no question about their getting the clinic as a nurse wa3 being appointed in April. It was a question of being ready. If anything in connection with the clinic should want attending to during tin/ holidays he, and the secretary would attend to it. The _ecretary- to advise the Tokomaru and Makerua Committees what has been done. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.
The headmaster (Mr White) reported‘that he had purchased the prizes, the Dux medal was being donated by the chairman, and the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) had donated two prizes which are to be awarded to the boy and girl making most progress for the year in Standard IV. The proficiency results were, not availablbe, but fie could say they were very satisfactory. The average attendance had been 299, 301, 293, 297 and 294, and the, roll number 312. The attendance was very unsatisfactory, there being a certain amount of laxity as soon as the exams were over. The- usual breaking-up ceremony will be held and will take place on Wednesday, 19th December, at 1.30 p.m., to which, all parents are cordially invited to attend. Mr White said that under the new syllabus there would be a Standard VII next year. COMMITTEE’S APPRECIATION. The' chairman asked Mr White- to convey to the teaching staff the appre ciation of the committee for the splendid work they are doing in getting up a school concert to raise funds for the school, 'v
