CARNIVAL WEEK AT CHRISTCHURCH.
CUP MEETING TO-MORROW.
(By Silken Rein)
The first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting will be ✓ ■held on* Saturday when that important ' event, the N.Z. Cup, is set down for decision'. Twelve runners remain m the event at the time of writing and ■• though Star Stangers defection has robbed the race of a good deal of its interest there' is sufficient in quality ■and numbers to make the race a gjoci one. The second important event, the Stewards' Handicap, has a big field with - manv possibilities. With exception of the first race the ■ minor events, have filled well and the meeting should attract a large crowd • of holiday makers' who are visiting Christchurch for carnival week. SPUING HURDLES, 2 miles.—Nukuroai 12.9, Nucleus 10.9, Beaumont 10.5, Diana's Lad 10.2, Carinthia, Nine of Spades 9.V, Troilus 9.4. Nukumai may be beaten by th« weight, but he" looks the' most likely for this distance. He may find most • challenges Diana's Lad, "' ; SPRING PLATE, 1 mile.—Smithoreons, Panther,-Historic, Mendip, Moorgas, Philippi, Beau Gestc, Mark Mint, Teri 8.2, lmaroscbud, Narrative, Malm- • sey, Poetess, Quarterdeck 7.11, Phastir, Cashier, Nightmarca, Concentrate, Jet Black, Filosol, Starshooter, Roscrea 7.7, Pride, Lucky Light, Bon Rose, Sarnia In a big field such as this there is plenty of. room for a surprise. Recent form is represented' in Mendip, Teri and Cashier. LINWOOD HANDICAP, 7 furlongs. —Panther 9.4, Desert Lad 8.10, Noteworthy, Nightmarch, Camisader 8.8, . Denior 8.5, Silver Rule 8.4, Chide', Red Heckler 5.3, Narrative, Amor,- Pound Note, 8.2, Phastar 8.1, Rigmarole 7.9, Some Lad 7.7, Freezeout 7.(5, Impertinence 7.4, Tembroney 7.3, Bank Draft, Corsctiere, Star Raid 7.0. j'
This race also bears a very open as-
pect. Denier *s return to form is worth consideration while, Noteworthy and
Phastar are a good pair. Silver Rule . , may have improved to be good enough.
NEW ZEALAND CUP,'of 2000 sqvs.;
The withdrawal of Star Stranger .'; puts.. Count, Cavour and Rapier on the v'head of the list. The former is a proved stayer, but lie does yet appear to have struck form, while Rapier has improved to such an extent that he will now be elected favourite. His unsuspectecV win at Wellington, will , bring him no end of support. Beacon Light's form does not stand out in this field, but .both Set Sail and Pink Note v have wins in their favour, but the distance is likely to trouble them. Black Mint may i find that that is the 6b : staele also but he is game. Oratrix may be benefitted by her racing in Australia and she has come into fav-' our as the result of her second to Joc- , elyn in the. Metropolitan. ; Rotor is a likely one if the going is-on the heavy side, while Shining Armour has been Unplaced, in much weaker company . than" this. Lucy Lockett has been consistent ivi th .plaeings but her fornV does not .make her out as dangerous in a 2 mile race. > Hoylakc has improved beyond all expectations and he should make it; a good race. Beau ' Geste would be the surprise if he won. It looks the finish being fought out by
Rapier Oratrlx Hoylake.
WELCOME STAKES, 5 furlongs.— Admiral- Drake/Captivate, Cossack Chief, First Money, Gold Tinge, Honour, Ste'altlr 8."5, Aspiring, Courtlike, Duellona, Francolin, Speed Light B.o'.
Interest in-this race will, be'centred rotind the running of Honour, who was purchased a record pri.ee at the Trentham, yearling sales. .. Another point,.of interest will be the duel between* Aspiring and Gold Tinge in whic(h southerners are confident the former will prevail. On the same terms 'Speed Light should again, beat. Francolin though the latter' has been unlucky. The best trio on form are Aspiring, Gold Tinge and Speed Light;
APPRENTICES' HANDICAP, 1 mile.—Quarterdeck 9.0, Amor 8.3, "Waterloo 8.0, Smithereens 7,13, Zcuxis 7.12, Starshooter 7.11, Wreath of Myrtle
7.2, All Comment, Rabbi, Pride, Calamine 7.1, Uproar, Viscount, Royal Flower, Star Raid, Kulrnnge, Thurlow 7..0.
Though there is a good deal of form .for speculation in this event, the three top-weights, Quarterdeck, Amor and Waterloo, (if reserved) make most, appeal, particularly the latter who is in. great, heart. •',','■
There 13 a big field;, due-to start in the second big event and it should be a good betting race. Good performances have* been registered, by Silver
Paper and Arrow Lad, while Paperchase should win soon . Crown Area is a possibility on Wellington running. BICCARTON HANDICAP, 9 furlongs.—'Mandane 9.4, Battle Colours 8.12, First Sight 8.9, Royal Game 8.4, Gay Sonnet, Sir Eoy 8.8, Town Bank 8.1, Full Feather, 7.13, Front Rank ,7.8, Vaward. Vigilance, Kilperon, Decoy Bird 7.7. In the concluding event a recovery, perhaps, may be found in Gay Sonnet, Mandane and Front Rank.
