SHANNON BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUBS.

The weather cleared for the opening of the above Clubs' season on Saturday, beautiful sunshine prevailing during the afternodiu 'Considering the. unsettled- state of-the weather in the morning there was a good attendance of visitors, who included a largo'number of ladies, among whom .were representatives of the Levin and Manakau Croquet Clubs': Rinks from the Palmerston North, Levin and Foxton Clubs were also among those present. >Owing to the heavy rain, during the previous night, the greens Were- heavy, but nevertheless enjoyable games were i played by -the,'. Ijowlers and croquet players. Everything passed off most successfully, those present spending a pieasaut afternoon. The lady members of the Croquet Club provided afternoon tea, which'was greatly appreciated. ',....•'■■ s -

On behalf of Mrs C. C. Franks, the president^of the Croquet Club, Mr A. 11. Morgan, in a happy speech, wished the members of the Croquet Club .a pleasant season. He ' called on Mrs Franks to shoot the first ball,-then'de-claring the season open. As president of the Bowling Club, Mr Morgan then extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, members of the club and intending members. He said that they were fortunate after the boisterous night that the elements had passed away-and that they were being blessed with bright sunshine for the opening. He hoped that new members would be able to carry\ on. and in years to come that the ganie of bowls would be a pleasure in their life. The popularity of bowls went back many years ago. A British Admiral once played bowls while waiting for the enemy, and the game had been carried on ever since, nfrtil this legend or tradition had now become almost a national one. During the season he iwould- look forward to the older members coaching the new members, as it was these, .lew members who would carry, the game on in the years to come. He then called on Mrs Morgan iu throw up the kitty, after which Mr T. Hensman, one of the oldest, members of the Club, rolled the first bowl, and he then declared the season open. Foxton—J. Newth, M. Newth, Howe, Warrick (s) 13 v. Shannon —Hudson, Lee, Gagliardi, Jones (s) 21.

The winners of the croquet competitions' were as follows: —Hitting the peg/Mrs S. Hall (Levin); golf cro-quet,-Mrs Bowling (Manakau). Yesterday (Labour Day) the members of the Bowling Club held a. Progressive pairs tourney in which sixteen players took part. The games were thoroughly enjoyed and some close finishes resulted. Four rounds of eleven heads each were played, the skip and Ifead with, the hightesf aggregate number of points scored being declared the winners. Following weie the scores: —iS'kips: ,E.
