SHANNON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

There was a large and enthusiastic gathering at the Women's Institute general meeting on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs Waring Taylor gava an interesting report of the delegates' visit to the veeent meeting of Institutes held-in Palmerston North, when a Wellington Federation was formed. • Correspondence dealing Avith the W.I. Stall at the forthcoming Royal Show, was received and several members promised to consider sending articles for exhibition or sale. It was decided that for varioua._ reasons it was not possible to hold the Jumble sale on Saturday next a 3 previously proposed, and in deference to another sale of work to be held in the town shortly, it Avas decided that the Institute hold a combined Sale of Work, produce, etc., and Jumble Sale, on November 17th, when it. is hoped many useful bargains Avill be on offer.

As- the Institute is endeavouring to do as much good in the community as funds will permit, and is at present very low in finance, it is hoped the sale will receive a fair measure of support.

The purchasing of a piano has been a heavy drain on the Institute this year, but it is hoped to have that paid off in December, after which more may be done in the way of procuring visiting demonstrators from the larger towns. Such things as Dressmaking, Millinery, and all. forms, of home handicrafts are being considered for the coming year.

It Avas finally arranged that the Social Evening( per the annual syllabus) for Wednesday next should take the form of cards from 8 till 9.30, then a short musical programme, supper and competitions. Good prizes are being offered and only Is being charged for admission. *

The competition for worked D 'oyley brought in' 1 the, usual good "work and was won by Mrs W. Taylor. A short musical programme and afternoon tea were much enjoyed, while the display of many articles already made toAvards the Sale of Work, encouraged members to forge ahead. The tea hostesses Avere Mesdames Blackboume, Sinclair, and T. King, jun. Avhile Mesdames Conchie, Guerin and Miss Brady were Avelcomed as new members. Mrs Butcher Avas also elected a new member.

W. I. badges found ready sale, and the sale stall at Avhich members can buy or sell, did good business, the Institute commission of 2d in the Shilling amounting to 2s lid, a record to date.
