“LADIES MUST DRESS.” Virginia Valli and Lawrence Gray have the leading romantic roles in “Ladies Must Dress,” a Fox Films production wliieh comes to the Maori* land Theatre on Wednesday. This is a comedy-drama of to-day which centres about a problem which began with Eve. The question is, “Can a Aoman afford to neglect her dress?” Taking this -situation in its broadest sense, and adapting it to every-day conditions, Victor Hcennan is said to have developed it into one of the most interesting stories brought to. the silver sheet in recent months. In her present picture Miss* Valli starts as a plain little stenographer who finds that her sweetheart is turning ■ against her because she does not “dress the part” as other girls do. When she dons modern dress, however, she finds that she is a target for “the menace,” in the person of Earle Foxe. This develops complications which cause endless trouble until Gray sees the light and offers the only logical solution.
“THE PATENT LEATHER KID.” Richard Barthelmess’s great picture, “The Patent Leather Kid,” has been acclaimed for the remarkable realism of its settings, and the almost inspired acting of the principals, Richard Barthclmess and Molly O ’Day, who enacts the role" of the Bast Side dancer with such faithfulness, and makes ‘ of the vivid character such a dramatic success. The story, which is the most credible and convincing of any production dealing with boxing area and the war, has .afforded Barthelmess a chance to show just how good he is. He lives the part of ‘ ‘ The Patent Leather Kid;” catching the spirit of the braggart, egotistic hard-living, hard-loving young pugilist, while the acting of Molly O’Day is something not often seen on the screen. This attractive little player does some wonderful work in this production; at one moment a cheeky provocative little gamin, at another the eternal woman sacrificing herself for love, and the coward man she had given her brave little heart to. —The Avar scenes are the most spectacular ever screened, not excepting the greatest A\*ar pictures of the past decade. The exploits of the Tank Corps are guaranteed to give the most blase a kick. The picture will be screened on Friday.
