RACING AT MASTERTON.

BIG FIELDS- FOR TO-MORROW

* THE ACCEPTANCES REVIEWED,

(By Silken Rein)

The acceptances received for the Masterton Eacing Club's Spring Meeting to-morrow are particularly good m respect of numbers and the class, too, is" in keeping with the importance of the meeting. Following, as its does, a few days after the Carterton fixture, the form provided by the earlier meeting should, no doubt, be of valuable assistance to speculators though newcomers in Commendation, Moorgas and Black Mint etc., arc liable to upset the Carterton form. A number of runners have double engagements and with their actual movements in doubt at the time of writing the task of / sorting out" the fields at their present stage is a trifle confusing. The racing will be full of interest in view of the forthcoming meeting at Trentham later in the month. Courtlike ran well at Wanganui.

There is very little form among those engaged in the four furlong Nursery Handicap and the fact that Courtlike ran a very good third behind Speed Light and Francolin at Wanganui he should heaJd the list of favouritism. The field, nevertheless, is a big one with a good deal of unknown quality and that.section may provide the winner . Courtlike is the form horse however with Coon Song and Royal Flyer next best. Dancing Star shown promise.

With a field of twenty-four due to

start in the Maiden Stakes the possibilities look many, but when form is -sorted out there' is but few. Carte/ton running suggests Rillet Jet Black and Tcheka who finished in that order behind Veronese, the winner. Dancing Star, however, was not given an outing at last week's fixture, but she is the right sort and should be in evidence in this With T. Metcalfe as her pilot Dancing Star will be hard to beat, most opposition, it is anticipated will come from Rillett and Jet Black. Decoy Bird Improving. With a field' of sixteen in the Highweight Handicap, the opinions of speculators will be .divided. Billion is the most recent winner, but the class was poor while Pantagruel scored in a hurdie event at Manawatu Hunt meeting. Starboard Light and Shining Armour were winners at Dannevirke and the former won again at Napier Park. He is not yet apparently a back number land should make 1 his presence felt in this event. Decoy Bird is showing a return of form. At Carterton in a six furlong event he ran third, 6 lengths behind the winner and later in the day ran...third in a "seven" less than 13 lengths behind the first horse. It would seem from this that a mile would suit him admirably. Shining Armour and Starboard Light will probably carry the money, but Decoy Bird is entitled to respect. Veronese in Form. Historic has the best recommendation in the field due to start in the Lansdowne Handicap, but he may need a race to put him right. Veronese was a long while getting on the winning list, but she managed it at Carterton in the opening event and later in the day, started in a' five furlong race tc beat-all but Banket. Now that he hac struck winning form he may go on ,; with it. Ghrey Mist and Arrow Boy are a good pair, but they are also engaged in the Electric Handicap. Rory Mor is improving with every race while Baskier who ran second to Arrow Boy at Carterton is a likely sort. Arrow Boy, if started, with Baskier and Ver onese should find the favourite. Two .brackets in big race. A field of twelve is due in the principle event and includes the two brackets Black Mint —Royal Game and David Garrick—Taliaker. If the former pair are allowed to go to the post the double chance will attract a lot of support, but it is more than likely Royal Game will be reserved for the second leg. The other bracket is also an attractive one for speculators. David Garrick ran a very good third behind Tresham and Vigilance at Haw'kes j Bay while Talisker was finishing» p well , into fourth position at Carterton. Blimp will be in demand also. The sou of Gasbag is improving with age and should give a good account of himself in this event. Horomea will find friends ' after winning the Carterton Cup while the runners up'Teri and Vigilance are to be respected, particularly the former who ,is running into form. Tiie going may be suited to the inconsistent Kilmiss. -The favoured trio will probably be' Black Mint, Teri (T. <Metcalf), and David Garrick. Gold Cure and Moorgas. Full Mark is the most recent winner in this field of eleven promised in the Lawn Handicap. His win at Carterton was a creditable one, but not sufficiently good enough to beat either Gold Cure and Moorgas if they are well. That the latter is returning to form is shown in his second to Toxeuma in the H.B. Guineas. Gold Cure made promises earlier in the season and then failed to fourth position at Marton. Outside of Moorgas .he should not be ■ seriously troubled with this • collection. Eotowhero is the one that should show improvement on Carterton running. where he ran second. Volplane has no recent recommendations but that is when he turns up. Gold Cure and Moorgas will most likely be in at the finish with Rotowhero handy. Commendation v. Form. On past- performances Commendation is entitled to most respect in the Grand-

stand Handicap, but form is much in evidence in this event and if he can account for them he is as good as his earlier form suggested. Black Mintneed, only to account for the principal event to bring much support for his stable companion Royal Game. At Carterton Royal Game beat King Midas by a length but with the latter running into form and in receipt of another 41b., he may be able to turn, the tables. Pangolin has been off the scene, for a short time, while.Horomea, Teri and Anolo are engaged in the Masterton Handicap and Decoy Bird in the Highweight. Dobbin may need a race, but Kilmezzo is capable of keeping with a slow field. Royal Game and King Midas will be Commendation's most troublesome opponents. A "Five" Suits Miss Gowrie. With the exception of five of the runners in the concluding event all are maiden performers, (Grey Mist and Arrow Boy have earlier engagements, but if cither or both are started in this race they will be respected. Dry Area won well at Hawkes Bay, and the Acre-Drought gelding will makemuch appeal. Miss Gowrie is a fast one over five furlongs and in her firstouting of the season at Carterton she ran fourth and was not ridden out, a conclusion arrived at by the officials at that meeting. The pair then that are entitled to support are Miss Gowrie and Dry Area. .- Riding Engagements. T. Metcalfe: Equitant, Dancing Star, The Dove, Teri, and Holus Bolus. J. Barry: Roman Lake. T. Green: Insurgent, Callanmore and Rillet, L. G. Morris: Royal Flyer and Commendation. A. McDonald: Grand National. C. W. France: Waterspear. ■R. J. Maclde: Grey witch, Winloek, Grey Mist. C. Broughton: Vaucleuse, Moorgas, Pangolin, Dry Area. A. G. Murray: Coon Song, Blimp, Kilmezzo, KJijng Quex, Arrow Boy. J. S. Potter: Volplane, Wild Pigeon.
