SHANNON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

At the usual monthly meeting of the Women ’s Institute held on Wednesday evening, Mrs B, W. Taylor presided and in opening the meeting voiced the sympathy of members with Mrs and Miss Butt, and with Mrs and Miss Aim in the anxiety they are at present feeling through the severe illness of Mr Butt and Mr Aim. All joined in the sincere wish that both gentlemen would soon be restored to good health. Among the correspondence was a letter pf thanks from the organiser of the fund started to procure a ear for the Dominion organiser, and to which Shannon had contributed £5. It was stated that, so successful was the effort that ii new Ford ear had been bought and would be ready for the organiser (Miss Spencer), whoa she returned home. to Rissington a,t the end of the month, after a visit to Auckland. Miss Spen-~ cer is expected to visit Palmerston Noith' at the end of October and (is anxious to meet from all Wellington Provincial Institutes, ■ with a view to starting a Wellington Federation. * . • As a “roll call,” “a dinner menu for three” was most successful, and a lively exchange of recipes resulted. Unfortunately not many members had studied the syllabus sufficiently to note the prepared “reading or recitation,” but all answered the call in some way, and of the prepared-readings, Mrs Pettitt’s poem, “The Sailor’s Mother” was accorded hearty applause* Games and competitions were entered into in good stylo, the “sentence” competition being proclaimed a tie between three members, Mesdames Burling, Black- . bourne and L. Richardson. Several entries eame in for the “beat dressed some remarkably capable and painstaking work was in evidence. After much deliberation aiid minute examination of detail it was decided by vote, that one dressed throughout in white crepe-de-chine, complete in every detail of a little girls’ clothing, and every garment, removable, was the winner.. This was the work of Mrs T. King, junr. - Supper was... provided by Mesdames Richardson, Ellwood and Wiggins. : It was decided to leave the date of the sale of work iii abeyance for a while in the hope that Mrs Butt (president) may return home before final arrangements need be made. The weekly sewing machine meetings are still being held in the Plunket room every Wednesday at 3 p.m., when all well-wishers will be welcome. - The following is one of the ..winning papers in the “sentence” competition. Each word must begin with “B” and , the sentence must be connected:—“Better be brave bearing bigger burdens, because bravery brings brighter, beautiful, bounteous blessings.”
