THE GENERAL ELECTION.
PARTIES GETTING READY. MANY CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED With barely three months to go before the general election, political parties are actively preparing for what seems likely to be one of the most interesting campaigns in the history of the Dominion. Already many candidates have entered the arena, and within the next week or two it is probable that the total will draw near the 200 mark. With the entry into the field of the United Party, which has declared its intention of contesting over , seventy j seats, and the determination of the \ Labour Party to put forward candidates in most of the electorates, it appears unlikely that there will be a great number of straight-out fights. The total number of contestants will probably be a good deal more than was the*ease in 1925. | The date of the election has not yet been announced by the Prime Minister; it is generally believed that it will be in the third week in November. Three years ago the election was held on November 4th, but it seems hardly likely that such an early date will be fixed this year. The state of the parties in the present House of Representatives is as follows: — Reijorm 68 . Labour Nationalists, 11 Independent —2 The following is a summary of the party allegiances of the candidates at present in the field: — Reform Party 65 Labour Party 48 United Party 39 Liberal and Independent Liberal 8 , Country Party 2 Independent 7 Christian Socialist. 1 Maori National 1 Total • 1701 Members- of the present Parliament who have intimated that they do not intend to seek re-election are: —T. W. Rhodes (Reform, Thames), Hon. D. Buddo (Nationalist, Kaiapoi), T. K. Sidqy (Nationalist, Diuuedin North), J. MeC. Dickson (Reform, Chalmers). The Hon. W. Nosworthy (Reform, Ashburton), after announcing that he would not seek re-election, has decided, in response to requests from his constituents, |to be a candidate for Mid-Canterbury, which comprises the i bulk of the old Ellesmere and Ashbur- ' ton electorates.
