AMERICAN PRESIDENCY

HOOVER NOT VERY POPULAR. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 1. There is much talk in California >bout the cold reception accorded to VTr. H. C. Hoover when the Republican iandidate for the Presidency paid his irst official visit to San Francisco since as nomination. Bands played, but here was no enthusiasm. • For a city which is overwhelmingly ‘Republican, the reception was a complete failure. Partisans are discussing the question whether Mr. Hoover will )c able to carry even his own State >if California. : The truth appears to be that Mr. Hoover is not an attractive figure, uni cannot catch the imagination of (he people. The Republicans appear io bo faced with a terrific handicap m the personality of their candidate, opposed as lid is by a popular idol like Mr. A 1 Smith. But it is evident also that the “wet” and “dry” issue is going to assume very large proportions. In California at least, Mr. Smith 'a action in plainly stating his belief m modification of the existing “dry” law, in the face of the Democrat Convention ’s law-enforcement plank, has secured him a big following among nojuinrl Republicans.
