MACHINE-MADE PICOT EDGE
A picot edge that is attractive and suitable for many use 3, especially children's clothing, can" be made easily on any sewing machine. ' Suppose, by way of illustration, that the material is muslin of medium weight or a little finer. Fold a long, narrow strip of newspaper until there are 15 layers. Place under it a strip of any other material, which will be discarded later. * Above the paper lay the material to be worked on, its right side down, next the paper. With an ' extremely long stitch, about one-eighth of an inch, and using No. 50 or No. 40 white cotton thread, sew through the two layers of cloth and the paper, as if sewing an ordinary seam. Tear away the paper a few thicknesses at a time, so as not to pull the stitching. Then • fold underneath the raw edge of the material on which the picot edge is to be, doing this on exactly the line of stitching and with No. 100 white eo.fc ton thread: and an extremely short machirio-stitch, sew along the edge, as close to the first stitching as possible. With the scissors cut through the middle of the open stitching between the material and the extra strip of cloth, and discord the latter, it now having served its purpose—that is, unless one has planned use for it, in which case the edge on that side should be finished before cutting the open stitching. Finally, cut away the edge underneath tho material, trimming it close to the stitching. This produces not only a good imitation picot edge, but a wee hem also, making a finish that, although xlainty looking, is really very durable. A picot edge may be made in thisS same way on silk materials also, using heavy silk thread for the first stitching, and the finest silk thread obtainable for the stitching along the edge.
