MANAWHENUA TEAM RETURNS
AN ENJOYABLE TOUR.
Manawhenua’s Rugby representative team returned from Wellington on Wednesday. The team with their nlanager, Mr H. R. Crawford, were all in excellent, fettle but their southern tour was not a triumphal progress, as the following record shows: — Versus Canterbury, lost 19-25. Versus .Otago, lost 9-11. Versus Southland, lost 4-12. The point scores were T. Parata (try and conversion), Tatana (try and conversion), W. Parata (penalty), Taylor (field goal), Parsons, Strange, Gleeson, Westwood, Akuira, (try apiece). Although beaten each time, the team put up a creditable defence and incidentally gained valuable experience. Throughout the tour the most spontaneous hospitality was accorded the team. It was noticeable, ,howevcr, that the coined named Manawhenua had given rise to much confusion. It is stated that many southern enthusiasts associated the team with the wild! regions out-back ffom the Main Trunk line.
The touring representatives had hard and willing games, somewhat deficient in sparkle. In this respect the versatile play of the Canterbury backs was a lesson in itself. Against Otago and Southland, however, the team found itself opposing men who played a similar game to that which they themselves adopted.
