i HOROWHENUA DISTRICT COUNCIL
/ The weekly meeting, of the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council was held in the Wistaria B»oms on Tuesday, there be- ' ing present: —Messrs W. Hannan (president), J. W. Procter (Hui Mai), W. Phillips (Referees), S. Hooper (Weraroa), E. M. Ryder (Wanderers), A. Richards (Shannon), and J. Casey (sec- ‘ retary). MUCH PLAYED PINAL'. A peculiar position arose out of the junior championship final played between Hui Mai and Miranui. On Saturday, August 11th, the final stage in the competition was reached by ' these teams, and the play-off, at Levin, resulted in a draw. Last Saturday they met at Levin to re-play the match, t and the result was again a draw, but a short extra spell was played and Hui Mai won by a try. This procedure was called in question by the management committee, and a letter of explanation was received from the referee, Mr R. Sands, who attended the meeting in support of it, with Mr E. Bevanas a , witness. The evidence showed that at j half. time, Mr Hannan, president of the Council, told Mr Sands that, in the event of a draw, two 10-minute spells . were to be played. The referee called both tefims together and explained to . them that they had to play two 10- ■' minute spells, but in the case of a score of.any kind except, a force-down ' the game would finish; and both teams agreed to this. Mr Sands took the view that, as soon as the final score \ eventuated, the game was no longer a draw, and Hui Mai were the winners as far as he was concerned, The President contended, and was : supported in the view, by a former ruling of the 1 Council, that the proper procedure in such a case was for the teams to play two extra spells of ten minutes each; the alternative to such a course, being that: 1 the teams would be bracketed as winners of the championship. Mr Ryder moved that the. match be counted as a draw and that the secre- ' ’ tary communicate with the two teams to ascertain whether they wislij., to be bracketed as winners or to re-play the match. ' , 1 Mr Casey seconded the motion, and it was carried without dissent. The chairman said it must be understood that, in all knock-out competitions, in the event of a drawn game, ■ two extra spells of ten minutes each must be played. , ' MATCH OR DEFAULT? Mr C. Hodgson, of Paraparaumu, for- , warded team slips of a game played last Saturday, at Paraparaumu, against Weraroa juniors. He stated that both captains had asked him to referee the game, which was carried out in very good spirit. Mr Hooper said it was reported to him by Tantrum, acting-captain of the Werarod team, that Paraparaumu forfeited the match in the Junior Knock--' , out competition, and then, making up a team with the . aid of some Maungatuku men, played a friendly game with . Weraroa. The secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the Paraparaumu Club and ascertain .whether his team defaulted to Weraroa. TWO MEN ORDERED OFF AT - FOXTON. ; Mr T. Kohika, referee in the match between the Foxton and Shannon juniors, at Foxton last Saturday, wrote reporting that he had been compelled to order-off S. Pentecost, of the Shan- ' non team, and T. Taylor, of the Foxton team, for fighting while the game was in progress. Previous to the occurrence he had warned both teams of rough play. On the motion of Mr Procter, it was decided that the two players named be suspended until they appear before the Council ' ROWLAND CUP. ... The secretary of the Manawatu Rugby Council (Mr C. E. Fraser) wrote stating that, as their competitions were not finished, they were not yet able to give a date for the Horowhenua juniors to play the championship winners for the Rowland Cup. ‘ NASH CUP SEMI-FINAL. The draw, for the semi-final of the Nash Gup competition took place, with the result, that Weraroa will play Hui Mai at Levin on Saturday, September Ist. Shannon will have a bye on ■ that date, and will subsequently play the winner of the above match in the final. JUNIOR KNOCK-OUT. The draw for September Ist in the Junior Knock-out competition, for the, Licensed Victuallers Cup, is as follows:—Weraroa v. Mirahui, at Shannon; Foxton v. Miranui, at Manakau. The next meeting of the management committee will be held on the day of the Manawhenua-Wellington match, Saturday next, at 5.30 p.m. The management committee of the Combined Union will meet on the same date, at Levin, at 7.30 p.m.
