HIGHWAYS BOARD ON HIGH PEDESTAL.

NOT CO-OPERATING WITH DIS-

TRICT COUNCILS. At. yesterday’s meeting of the Kairanga'County Council the general feeling was expressed that the Highway?; Board should come off their high pedes tal and be prepared to receive deputa tions from district councils on matters of great importance. Much more pro gross would be made if closer co-oper ation existed. Cr. Small stated that he felt that not enough use was made of the councils by the Highways Board, who wouk not receive any-deputations whatever Councils might pass resolutions, bu the subsequent letters sent' were often merely received. Undoubtedly on vita matters close co-operation was essen tial, and deputations could undoubted ly place vital questions before the Highways Board far better than through correspondency. The chairman reported that all coun ties were now to receive £2 for £1 subsidy for maintenance on subsidiarj highways. This subsidy would also b< available for bridges.
