TIMELY RAIN.
WILL EASE SITUATION AT. MANGAHAO HYDRO WORKS. /The rain which commenced yesterday and is continuing to-day, will be welcomed at the Mangahao hydro-elec-tric works, as for the past three weeks the supply of current to Wellington has had to be augmented by the city steam plants; the shortage being <due to the low water-level resulting from the dry winter. The position is not a satisfactory one for the Government, as, according to agreement, 'it has to pay the city for the power supplied. Moreover the running of the steam flant at Evans Bay day and night imposes a considerable strain on the plant. It is /disappointing to many people that the .Mangahao system, with its new clam, is unable to cope with consumers' requirements, even in the winter; but the load is constantly growing, and moreover M'a/ugahao is absolutely dependent onj (rainfall to keep the dams supplied, so it appears that the situation is one that cannot be adequately coped with" untiI L this system is linked up with that of Lake Waikaremoana.
