BOWLING.

ANNUAL MEETING OF SHANNON BdWLINa CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Shannon Bowling Club was held in the Pavilion on Tuesday evening, there being a fair attendance of members. The president (Mr B. Brann) was in the chair. PRESIDENT'S REPORT. The president's report to members was as follows:—"The past season may be regarded as a successful, one, both as regards play and also, as the treasurer's report will show, from a financial standpoint. Our membership last year was 37. Unfortunately this year we shall be without Messrs J. V. Burns, A* McLachlan, and T. Watterston--three old members and prominent in the affairs of the club. Mr Burns, during his term of office as secretary, was instrumental in having our club incorporate*, and was also a mam mover iri the matter of the electric light installation.- The club has suffered a very great loss by Mr W. 11. Gunning's illness, which has temporarily prohibited him from active membership. It is safe to say that no individual member i has' done more for this club than Mr j Gunning. He was one of the founderg of the Shannon Bowling and Tennis Club in 1905, and from then on has. never spared time or money to furthei bowling in Shannon. For some weeks before our opening day last season, Mr j Gunning, with Mr E. J. Butt, spent day | after day at work top-dressing the j green, and a very hearty vote of thanks is due from us to these gentlemen, who thereby saved us considerable expense and helped to place the club upon a financial footing. I will later ask some member to move that a letter be forwarded wishing Mr Gunning a speedy recovery and assuring him of tile continued best wishes of this club. "Owing to daylight saving, the electric light play was not taken as much advantage of as in previous seasons. The balance-sheet shows that 23s 6d vva? the amount of revenue, received from night play last season, as against £8 13= the previous year. In considering thia matter recently, the secretary and myself were of opinion that tournament—singles and perhaps pairs—might bt arranged next season; the entrance fe-. to be os per member; and, say 20 mem bers entered, a trophy valued at £3 bt given to the winner or winning pair, leaving £2 for the club; all games tc be played under electric light, to con sist of 11 heads, and to be won on thi aggregate points scored. This is mere ly a suggestion with a view to bringing in revenue from lights and entrance fees and perhaps to save the contem plation of increased subscriptions. Th( scheme could no doubt be improved upon when the time comes to discuss it.

"In inter-club play last season wc achieved second place for the Triangu-lar-Shield. We had visits from Otaki and Palmerston North Clubs, very en joyable games resulting. A rink con sisting of Messrs Morgan, Whibley, Blackwood and E. Butt won, defended, and eventually lost again, the Kinneburgh Feathers. In the club competitions Mr F. Whibley won the singles championship and Messrs! Whibley and Clayton won the pairs. Mr Gagliardi won Mr Gunning's trophy for the singles competition played on Anniversary Day. Messrs T. Watterston and T. Shannon were the winners at our Labour Day pairs competition. I have to thank my vice-president, Mr Morgan for assistance during the year, also oui secretary and the members of various committees. I desire to say a few words (in special recr'gnition, of Mr Mason's help. In having his servicesas hon. secretary and treasurer I con aider this club to be very fortunate indeed. During his term of office lu has studied the interests of the club in every possible manner, and our recent successes, financial and otherwise, art largely due to his management. 1 thank you for a patient hearing gen tlemen and wish you further successful . years.' ' The report was adopted. BALANCE SHEET.

The secretary and treasurer (Mr A. Mason) in presenting the balance sheet stated it showed a marked improvemen. on ijr.e-. previous one. Last year they had completed the season with a debit balance of £2O 17s sd, and this hanow been reduced to £5 "8s lid. Tht balance sheet shows outstanding subscriptions amounting to £6 7s -6d. 01 this amount another subscription ha* since come in, making only two out standing. The final payment on the installation of "the electric light ha* been made, and from now on only tin electricity consumed will need to be paid for. Mr Mason thanked the president and the members of the various committeefor their assistance during the season ELECTION OP OFFICERS.

The election of officers for the en suing year resulted as follows: —Presi dent, Mr A. H. Morgan; vice-presi dent, Mr A. Blackwood; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Mason; auditor, Mr J. T. Bovis; general committee, Messrs W. Clayton, A. T. White, D. McLaggan, J. T. Bovis, F. Whibley, C. Lee, and officers, including retiring president, ex officio; selection committee, Messrs- W. Clayton, H. Knowlcs and E. Butt; green committee, Messrs A. H. Morgan and A. Mason; games committee to consist of members of general committee; delegate to Centre, Mr E. J. S. Sencer; delegate to Shield, left to the President to arrange. GENEEAL. A motion by Mr Bovis, that the secretary's services be recognised by giving him free membership, was carried. In speaking to the motion Mr Morgan stated that Mr Mason had helped considerably to keep the club high in the ideals of bowling and had kept the club well to the fore with other clubs. It' was resolved that it be a recommendation to. the Levin and Foxton Clubg that the Otaki Club be included in the Triangular Shield competitions. It was contended that with more clubs taking part in the com;.-titum, greater

interest and better bowling would re suit.

Mr Blackwood recommended that a suggestion box be placed in the Pavil ion or that members be circularised asking for suggestions. 'This, he thought, would be a great help to the general committee when they are drawing up a programme of games.—lt was decided o adopt the recommendation. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.

Mr White stated that, having in view he social function of the club. Ik nought they were not getting the best bowling with the mode they had been working under during the past two years. He had thought it out carefully, and he was of opinion that they should cut out "the championship pairs and singles. These, he said, were :iever finished satisfactorily, and they were losing the essence cf the game .n chasing after championship honours. The soeial side had been entirely neglected in not catering more for rink ?ames, these being the games where ;he majority of the club member* paricipate. He would like to see the club levote Wednesday and Saturday afternoons to club games. Mr Brann said, he had thought of eliminating way. Ah >:o revenue is derived from the pairs and singles championships, he had suggested that a tournament be arranged, the entrance fee to be 5s per member, with, say, 20 members, and that a trophy of £3 be giV®, leaving £2 for the club; all games to be played under electric light; to consist of 11 heads ; to be won on the aggregate points scored. The president said they should follow the lead of other clubs and not play championship pairs or singles on Wednesday or Saturday afternoonMr White said this would fill the bill. He the»- moved and Mr Blaekwoo'd seconded, "That i" future no pairs and singles championships for competition matches be played on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and that these afternoons be reserved strictly for club games as arranged by the games committee." An amendment moved by Mr Mason, "That the pairs, singles and rink championships be omitted next season, and that the selection committee appoint the representatives to attend the Manawatu Centre championship tourney, and.that Wednesday and Saturday afternoons be strictly reserved for Club games as arranged by the Games Committee," was defeated, and the motion carried. VOTES OF THANKS. Votes of thanks were accorded tho selectors, Press and -Messrs Blackwood, and Gagliardi, the latter for services rendered in connection with levelling and laying, out the green,
