U.S. GOVERNMENT’S DILEMMA
. . (Sun Special). \ SAN FRANCISCO, July 14. Teetotal Uncle Sam may shortly be a buyer for some 240,000 bottles of Scotch 'whisky), This is not the result of thirst, but of penance. Holding that over-zealous coastguards improperly seized the steamer Coal Harbor two years ago, the court now award the ship and cargo, altogether valued at £145,000, back to the j Vancouver owners, the Consolidated , Liquor Company, and give them permission to claim, through the Canadian Government, for damages for wrongful seizure. The facts showed that the ship was captured more than 20 miles, off the shore. The 10,000 cases of Scotch, seized with the vessel, are fondly supposed to be held in the Custom House here. 1 There are many rumours, however, that it long since disappeared, ,br that the bottles are now filled with water. The liquor returned' must be of the same quality as when it was Beized. If it isn’t there, Uncle Sam will have to go into the open market and buy. Finally the liquor will be re-crated and shipped back to Scotland, whence it eame. In Glasgow the owners may once more regain possession of this interesting cargo.
