SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Cr s T. C. Thwaites, A. E. Hyde, R. Downes, Jas Richardson, Jas Curran, jun, Jas Curran sen., and E. J. S. Spencer. BELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. A circular was received from the Public Works Department stating that subsidies to local bodies for relief of unemployment will be granted 50 per cent of labour, based on relief work rates of pay—married men and single men with dependents 12s per day, single men without dependents 9s per day, £1 for £l. Subsidies on materials as well as wages will also be granted on works undertaken with voluntary subscriptions, and the subsidy as far as labour is conerned is not limited to relief work rates of pay. The abovementioned subsidies apply to urban and suburban districts (city councils, boroughs councils, etc.), but in rural districts, (county councils, road board, etc), a subsidy is paid on materials atwell as wages in respect to works undertaken from revenue, loans or public subscriptions, but the portion of the .subsidy regarding wages is limited to relief work rates of pay in the case of "loan or ordinary revenue. In anothei letter the Council were asked to submit particulars of any work suitable for unemployed, which the Council has in view,' pointing out that Oversee; Gagliardi, of the Department, should be made conversant with the proposals before the Council submitted them, sc that they could be dealt with more expeditiously. Bef erring to the -widening of Shee han Street, the Mayor stated that he ; along with Cr. Curran, jun., and Mi , Gagliardi, had inspected the Sheehar, Street road, Mr Gagliardi -informing them that he could not recommend u subsidy for the work to be done by unemployed, there not being sufficient work to put a number of men on, at most of it could be" done by the use oi horses and scoops. * • Cr, Thwaites said that, although £4( was a trifling amount, it would be a help. ' The Council were of opinion that al contributing bodies should have direc representation on the Board, and i« motion was carried that they suppor the request, and that, if necessary, th. Council will send a delegate on anj r deputation. . In reply to Or. Hyde, the Town Clerk stated-that the hospital levy to be pau by the borough this year is £lb4 11. 3d, an increase of. £33 10s U on tin. previous year. FOREMAN'S COTTAGE. : Cr. Curran, jun., stated that, aeeom panied by the'Town Clerk, he had in: spected the foreman's house. He ro commended that the lavatory be renewed and that battens be put on the outside of the washhouse.—Kef erred t(. the Building Committee. The Building Committee reported that, with the exception of a few minor jobs, the additions and alterations to the foreman's cottage are now completed. The estimate for the work was ,£l6B 4s 3d, which did not include the installation of the electric light and several extras, the total cost of tho work being £l9l 12s 9d. Cr. Downos said the Building Committee were to be congratulated on do- " ing the work so close to the estimate. GENERAL. The Range;* reported having impounded two head of stock during the past fortnight. An application for a permit to erect a cottage in Whittaker Street was referred to the Building Committee. Cr.- Curran, jun., drew attention to the narrowness of.'the turning at the r parking place near the cemetery gates. He recommended that thislie widened; also the road in the dip near the cemetery.—Kef erred to the Road Committee. Cr. Downes reported that the Foreman had informed him that the roof of the reservoir required attending to, r as some of the rafters had sprung; also that one of the concrete pillars had a

bad split in it.—Cr. Spencer was appointed to attend to the roof of the reservoir. In connection with the damaged pillar, the members of the Council will visit the waterworks at the week-end, when this will be dealt with, along with other matters. , The Cemetery Committee reported that an effort is being made to have graves put in order, and the persons concerned have been written to, asking their co-operation.
