The following dates were arranged for the Manawhenua representatives:- — Wairaiipa, July 11th, at Palmerston North; Wanganui, August 4th, at Wanganui; Canterbury, August 11th at Christchurch; Otago, August 15th, at Dunedin; Southland, August lath, at Invercargill; Wairarapa, September 15th, at Wairarapa. INSURANCE SCHEME.
The notice of motion by Mr Richards, “That the Union grant £SO. to the Manawatu and Horowhenua, Councils, £25 each, towards their insurance funds,” came forward for discussion. In moving the motion, Mr Richards said he thought both Councils and tlieir players would benefit. He said it was the aim of the Horowhenua Council to build up their fund and thus be able to increase the amount to be paid to injured plfiycrs. Such a grant would help both Councils. , . Mr Crawford, in seconding the mo'tion, said he did so because he thought the Union should help both Councils. Mr Ongley said it was'purely a matter of finance. It would be profitable to Manawatu, and the Union also was going to profit. If the Union were going to have any, profits, then they could not do better than help both Councils. Mr Coll’ns: As things are now, if a plaver gets injured the onus is on the Council. The Union should take out a cover on all its players. ■ Mr Hannan: Horowhenua accept no responsibility for insurance on players m the Manawhenua Union. Mr Collins said he had understood that each Council had agreed to responsibility. 1 Tilt was pointed out to him that Horowhenua did not accent liability, but Manawatu did. Mr Hardie said lie agreed with the proposal, and lie thought both Councils should lie reimbursed by the Union. Mr Hannan was of opinion that the Union should be strong enough to carry their own insurance. There was, he said, no argument that either Council should carry the ‘ ‘ baby.’ ’ Mr Ryan said that anything paid to the Councils would be repaid 100 per cent over,, and they should assist both Councils in every possible way. Mr Ongley said lie did not like to see players go on the field uninsured in Combined Union games. It was the Union’s «duty to establish their own insurance scheme. It was also a dutj they owed to themselves if they had the money. Mr Eglinton moved that the matter be held over until the “washing up” meeting this season. Mr Hannan said he was agreeable to the grant of £25 to each Council as compensation, but the Union should certainly do something for themselves. Mr Richards said lie was willing to hold over his motion, to allow of the Union going into the question of starting a scheme of its own. Mr Eglinton’s amendment to hold the matter over till the end of the season was carried. The secretary, the treasurer and Mr Ongley were appointed a committee to bring clown an insurance scheme, and report at next meeting. JUNIOR REP. GAMES.
A request was received from Wairarana for a visit from a junior combined rep. team. Mr Procter thought the Union. should endeavour to run junior games if they could be financed, as it was from the junior ranks that the future representatives would conic. The meeting being of 'opinion that, junior combined matches should be played this season, it was decided to try and arrange games with Wanganui and Wellington, one away and one at home. Owing to the expense, it wag decided not to send a team to Wairarapa. GENERAL. The secretary reported that no reply had been received from the Wellington Union regarding a visit. It was decided that they be written to again. No reply has so far been received from Canterbury respecting the acceptance of the Union’s challenge for a Ranfurly Shield match. ' The sum of £lO ,was granted to the Ladies’ Hockey Association, who suffered a heavy financial loss owing to the Sheld match being held while their tournament was in progress. Mr Crawford was appointed manager of the team to meet. Wairarapa on July 11th. The match against Taranaki on Augusst 22nd, will take place at Levin. Mr Eglinton suggested a further match, Manawatu v. Horowhenua, before the Wairarapa match took place on July 11. However, it was decided
to ask the selectors to watch the Horowhenua v. Rangitikei Bebbington Shield fixture at Eoxton on July 7 and the inter-club game between Kin Toa and Old Boys on Saturday, and to hold a further trial match before the southern tour is entered upon.
