WAITARERE ROADING.
THE SCHEME MODIFIED.
NOT TO EXTEND TO BEACH IN THE MEANTIME. A modification of the Waitarere roading scheme, which was to give access to the beach at the Hyderabad, has been decided upon in the meantime. A deputation consisting of the Hon. Edward Newman and Mr W. S. Park, who vvere interested in the movement, waited on the County (Council on Saturday, being introduced by Cr. McLeavey.. j Mr Newman said that the Council’s resolution, under whieh those w r ho were forming the special rating district were to undertake the construction and maintenance of the road, had occasion* ed them some concern. In going into the question they found that the rat 1 ing would be so heavy that it would be impossible for them to deal with the land at all. The rating would amount to £l5O on his own land, a great deal of which was second-class land, and lie could not sell it with such a handicap; Very reluctantly he wished to tell the Council that the parties desired to cancel their application to form a special rating district. They were trying to modify the scheme alto 1 getlier. He had 1200 acres in the locality with no road access except a right-of-way through Mr McDonald’s land. It was now proposed to construct a road which would not go right to the beach,; the parties concerned doing the work themselves to the satisfaction of the County'Engineer.
Mr Park said that the parties recognised the fact that the maintenance must fall on them. He took no exception, personally, to the condition of maintenance attached to the Council's resolution. .
Cr. McLeavey asked if plans and specifications would be submitted to the Council before the work was gone on with.
Mr Park: It will be done on the old plans and specifications up to the distance it goes—about one and a-half miles. The idea in not going right through is to limit the traffic and limit the maintenance.
The chairman said he did not see that there would be any difficulty whatever in agreeing to what the deputation suggested. It would certainly obviate a great deal of work-in regard to gathering* information for submission to the Local Bodies Loans Board. Provided that the work now proposed was carried out in accordance with the plans as, submitted by Mr Poster, surveyor, and that it was done -to the satisfaction of the County Engineer, apparently there could not be any objection to it. , After the deputation had withdrawn, the chairman read a letter from the parties stating that they were prepared to enter into a covenant to do such formation w r ork as was satisfactory to the Engineer and would maintain the road in useable condition.
A resolution accepting the proposal was passed, on the motion of Cr. McLeavey, seconded by Cr. Kilsby. A sub-committee consisting of the councillors for the Wirokino riding, with the Engineer, was appointed to draw up the terms of the covenant.
