It was held by the committee that such an fficer could be of great assistance to the management in getting the competitions off. The financial, position was satisfactory to everybody. It had been deemed advisable that improvements should be made, to the pavilion, which would greatly add to its convenience. The opening day a been recommended to be held on a ba.urday in the coming season and on a Wednesday in the following year, after which the question of a rota or those days would be open to consideration. - The chairman expressed regret that it would not be possible for Mr T. F. Gibson, vice-president, to allow himself to be nominated for the position of president this year.. The members were very sorry that they would not have his company in the 1928-29 season. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —President, Mr J. D. Brown; vice-president, Mr C. THE NEW PRESIDENT. Mr Brown, in returning thanks „ for his election to the position of president, said he hoped that at the end of the season the members would be able to say that they had done the right thing. It was a ver.v hard mat-
ter for anyone to follow in the footsteps of Mr Foss as president, because it must, be recognised that the club had had a very good president in the past season. However, one could only do his best, h e assured the members that he would do his utmost for the club without fear or favour. Mr Foss, in retiring from the office of president, thanked all who had assisted him in the work they had a.t heart. Mr Parker asked if it would be possible for the Levin, Otald, Foxton, and Shannon Clubs to hold a one-day tournament at Levin. Mr Sherwood remarked that this would provide rather an attractive item during 011 c of the holidays at Ghiistmas or New Year.. Mr Clements stated that it, would be necessary to obtain the consent of the Manawatu Centre, and the other clubs in the Centre would be able to attend the tournament.. The chairman said Mr Parker, as a member of the Management Committee, could bring the matter forward m that committee. A RECTANGULAR SHIELD?
Mr Bull raised the question whether it would not be advisable to ask Otaki to join in the Shield matches. If this were possible the trophy • would the altered from the Triangular Shield to a ‘‘square” shield. (Laughter). He suggested a conference of the three clubs at present interested to consider the subject. The chairman stated that this could go forward as a recommendation to the clubs concerned. It, was mentioned that there was a tendency for the Otaki club to withdraw from the Manawatu Centre and become affiliated with Wellington. On the motion of Mr McDonald, the meeting passed a recommendation to the Management Committee that all competitions be played on the “two life” system, under which a competitor who is beaten in his first two games is eliminated. The voting, on a show of hands, was 14 in favour of the proposal and eight against it.
THANKS TO PAST PRESIDENT. Mr Brown moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president for his able work during the past year. He remarked that the members had always found Mr Foss very straight; he had carried out his duties in such a manner that the speaker felt very proud to move the club’s thanks to hnn.
