MANAWATU RACING CLUB.
AUTUMN MEETING.
4?HE FIELDS REVIEWED f
(By Silken Rein). ,
1 The Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting will open to-morroiv and con- ' tinue on Thursday, and. the form provided by (i the Easter meetings will find punters a little puzzled as the result of so many recent winners being engaged in practically every event.
11.45—WOODHEY HACK HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Six furlongs.
The top weight, The Raider, has gone Bnp 3 lbs as the result of his win at Feilding, while Fee Simple is up 141bs from Feilding weights, but with 9.0 ran out 6 furlongs at Masterton in 2 4-5 seconds less than The Raider at Feilding. Conditions, however, may have been different. The Feildingtrained runner, too, a lilcmg for the course as was evident at last meeting. * Vigilance has another engagement in a later race in a distance better to lier liking, but though she is a useful three-year-old it is doubtful if she can foot it with the ; speedy top weights. Moa, Bird with 2 lbs less ran a good “six” in 1.16 at Napier, while the unlucky Keddar would like another 2 furlongs. Orcades has little recent form while Silver Tray with 8.9 beat all but Royal Time at Waipukurau over 5 furlongs, and is meeting Moa Bird on -17 lbs better terms than when he ran second to him at Dannevirke over this distance. Callonmore is in at 15 lbs less than when..he beat a poorer field at Tauhereniltau (5 furlongs), while Moutoa Wonder’s only placing was at Bulls when she ran third, oj lengths behind Vigilance. Backers will prefer The Raider, Moa Bird, and Silver Tray.
12.25—KARERE HURDLES, of 250
Brigadier Bill with top weight has not been in public for some time and should be must benefited as the result of a race. He is a good one when well. Matu ran into minor placmgs prior to Feilding, where she won over a mile and a-half, while Revel will have many friends as the result of two creditable seconds at,,Auckland. Many are, of the opinion that Airtight would have won on the second start in Easte; if he had not fallen. He is a useful sort and seems to be able to get in the money on most occasions, and with , only G lb more the one who beats him will gi near -to winning. Early in'the season Powhiri was in good form while Kit burn looks daiigerous at the weights. ■ especially in view of his showing in February at Wanganui. Vexatious will appeal most of the others. Most support will be found for Airtight, Revel, and Matu.
-I.IO—PRINCE OF WALES HANDI-
This event has drawn the best field (with no less than nineteen due to start The possibilities are many and punters will have rare problem to sort out the prospective winners. Last year’s winner was Black Mint, who was 12tlselection and whose name appears or the card for fo-morrow. The Catmint representative is in good order at the present time, but the fact that there is sonie dispute of ownership will prob ably result in its non-appearance as was the case at Kiecarton. Crown Area is 91b better off than when he won al Trentliam over a mile and though lu is generally started over 7 furlongs hb Wellington running suggests that h( will do better over a longer distance Mandane ran a good race at Auck land. After meeting with plentv o', trouble on the journey he was hast, when seven furlongs from homd, bUv finished with a dash into a good fourth. Vertigern beat all but Crown Area in the Hutt Handicap, but the latter is 51b better off on this occasion. Yertigern, however, has proved himself over this distance. Joy Bird will keep them busy if she gets out first, ivhile the same may be said of Duke Abbey, who appears -to be very leniently treated so far as weights arc concerned. Both Tresham and Oratrix were prominent in the first mile or so in the Great Autumn this fact alone entitles this pair to p, certain amount of respect. Oratrix with 1 .1 ran into third place while Tresham 7.13 found the distance too far and finished seventh. Kilmiss and Vivo were winners .at Feilding, while Perle'De Leon and Gaze scored at Waipukurau, Addlepate filling second place to Perle De Leon. Gaze won with 11,13 and with 4.13 less to carry in. this race will be one of the dangerous ones. Paitonu ran into third place at Feilding, while Boyal Damon may prefer the “six.” Ngata will probably need a race or. two*to put him right, while The Swell and Huikai have, disappointed lately. When the r machine closes it w'ill probably be found that the favourites are — Crown Area, Mandane, and Oratrix.
I.SO—TE MATA I HACK HANDICAP,
Henna was at her best earlier in the season, while Hypnotic, though not appealing to the eye, is in good form and appears to have a “happy knack” of turning up at, a good price as was the case at Feilding and Napier. Spearmiss is another who is at her best at, the present time, her most recent win being at Tauhereniltau on the 7th. Mendip is a good sort but will find the distance a little too far, while Aropeta will have friends as the result of Bulls running. There, is a possibility in Flying Shot, but Cfavors will appear more. After running third on the first day and winning the maiden race on the second day at, Napier, Clavers went oh well and ’in a (one mile) at Wellington ran third to Nucleus and Bright Day. The next placing was at Waipukurau, where he ran second to Avazone, over 1;1 miles. A trio that deserve consideration therefore are: — Clavers, Hypnotic and Spearmiss.
2.3O—MANAWATU SIRES PRODUCE
Though Prince Humphrey has won the most stake money of the two-years-olds seen out this season, the result of the G.N. Champagne Stakes entitles Episode to the honours. In this event at 8.11 there is no doubt that the Li-mond-Homage representative will carry the money though there is a certain portion who have every confidence in Raasay. The latter was at a very short price in the Champagne Stakes but disappointed. Freehold ran third in that, event with 8.10 and carried the same weight to victory at Wanganui over five furlongs. Concentrate ran a good race at Christchurch a week ago, finishing second to Rin Tin Tin, six furlongs, which was covered in ' 1.12 4-5. She ran third and a first at last meeting on this course. Moorgas, by Gasbag, is a promising sort and will have a run on its home course. Metullus and Pure Gold have little to recommend them. The winning post should find Episode and Freehold in haudy positions. *
3.IO—AWAPUNI GOLD CUP, of 520
All the runners due to face the starter in this event have won a race during the last month. Mask scored both days at Auckland Easter meeting over 1} and 14 miles, while at the same time Reremoana won both days at Christchurch over seven furlongs. Star Stranger with 10.1 ran second at Avondale on Saturday and the Trentham and Wellington Cup winner will be one ol the hardest to beat. Ilynanna ran a nicely judged.race in the Great Autumn iffcndicap, while Laughing Prince’s most recent was at Trentham on 17th March:* Satrap is a right good sort, but the more seasoned horses Star Stranger and Hynanna 'will find most favour.
3.SO—TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, oi
Itoyal Damon has come on well, starting with a third at Napier on the first day and followed by a second on the next day. The next two starts then were at Dannevirke where he won both days. Benzora won at Opunake and in consequence was “expected” by a majority at Feilding on Easter Saturday, but just failed to pay a dividend. She made amends, however, in the next start. Money Order is a fast one, but has failed to run up to its showing earlier in the season. Dobbin comes now and again his last win being at Bulls. Broad Acre has shown promise while First Acre is getting closer in each start. Silverminc has'disappointed admirers, her best running was ai Auckland at Christmas, when she filled third money. Whcnuanui appears a 1 ttle out of class, while xiiavv and Kaiti are new. Miss Pat is in at 14 lbs less than when she ran second to Royal Ceres at Tuuheremkau. The favourite will probably be found among Royal Damon Benzora, and Broad Acre.
4.30. LINTON HACK HANDICAP, of
The concluding event of the first day promises a good race among the hacks. Vigilance is now on the top and is in a distance that suits her best. The first day at Bulls she showed much improvement on her Wellington running with the result that when she won on the second day she was at a short price. Improvement followed then to Masterton, (second and first) and a third at Feilding. 'Holus Bolus scored at Mastorton and Feilding. Whisogne has little to recommend him, while Some Lad, who has been off the scene for some time, won last at. Awapuni in December. Borsalene paid well at Tauhcrenikau over 6 furlongs on the first day and ran second in a “seven” on the second day. Kindle has been disappointment while Maui scored at "Woodville in the maiden and won at Dannevirke, finishing in front of Discourse and Spearmiss, Maui also ran second
to Mondip at Bulls. Shining Star is not always reliable, while King Mart must be given a chance on Feilding running. Aurora Borealis is in a distance that will suit better than the longer races which he has contested lately. Valuator has yet to win a race but is a promising sort and will appeal most of the light-weights. The trio with’best form are Holus Bolus, Vigilance and Maui.
