WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
BIRTHDAY PARTY,
The first anniversary of the formation of a branch in Shannon of the Women’s Institute Avas celebrated last evening by the holding of a birthday party in the hall in Ballance Street, when' about 100 persons spent .a most ■ enjoyable time. Cards and gaines Avere played until 9.30 p.m., the remainder of the evening being devoted to competitions, musical and. elocutionary items. Songs Avere contributed by Mesdames Cronquest, Bishop, and Riches, and Misses A. and V. Aim, and Mr J. Boaus; piano solo, Mrs Lind; recitation Mr A. E. Hyde. An excellent supper was provided, a feature being the huge birthday cake donated by Mrs .Waring Taylor, which Avas prettily decorated Ayith tiny candles. The competitions caused much amusement, particularly the egg and spoon, which Avas Avon by Mrs Burling and Master W. Radford. The Avinners of the most card games Avere Mrs Lind and Mr E. Butt. During the evening the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) on behalf of the visitors, in thanking the members of the Institute for such a pleasant evening, pointed out the splendid' Avork the Institute had done in giving assistance to those in need, Avhich he hoped Avould be continued. He stated that the Institute had been formed Avith a membership of ten, which had hoav increased to forty odd ; Avhich showed the interest taken in it. With cheers for the visitors and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” a thoroughly enjoyable Avas brought to a close.
