EXCURSION TO PARAPARAUMU

AN ENJOYABLE DAY’S OUTING.

On Saturday, a most enjoyable day was spent at Paraparaumu by members of the Shannon School cricket team, supporters, teachers, and others who took advantage of the special excursion arranged for the purpose. Over fifty made the trip, - leaving Shannon at 7.45 a.m. and returning at 9 p-m. The excursionists were met at the Paraparaumu station 'by Mr Roe (headmaster) and Mr Howe and other officials of the local cricket clubs, and escorted to the sports ground, where the first part of the programme was to take place. Steady rain unfortunately delayed the commencement of the cricket match for about an hour, but, the heavy clouds dispersing, a start was made with the game; which resulted, in a win for the visitors, and made the honours even—one win each. Before the start of the .match, morning tea both for cricketers and visitors was dispensed by the Paraparaumu ladies; apples were handed round, and the excursionists were made to feel at home at once. At 1.30 p.m. play was adjourned for lunch, and all the' excursionists were again given of the good things that the generosity of their hosts provided. A sumptuous sit-down meal was set out in the Sunday-scliool-room, and fifty healthy Shannon appetites did full justice to the feast. After luncheon, in giving thanks to the Paraparaumu people for the right royal welcome extended to the visitors, Mr. White (headmaster of Shannon) said it was difficult for him to express his feelings of appreciation for the wonderful way they had been treated, but lie was sure that the ory of that day would live long in the minds of all those fortunate enough to have made the trip. “For They, are Jolty Good Fellows” was heartily sung by the Shannon visitors, followed by three lusty cheers for their hosts.

The cricket match was resumed and ended; after which, buses supplied by those responsible for the entertainment, conveyed the excursionists to the beach, where the rest of the afternoon was spent most pleasantly.

Before leaving the picturesque seaside resort, all were the guests of Mr and Mrs White at their beach house, and hero afternoon tea was supplied. At 6.15 p.m. the buses and attendant motor cars were again filled and the happy party returned to the railway station, catching the late train and leaving amidst the cheers and good wishes of' - their hosts and the many new friends they had made. All wholeheartedly agreed that it had been one of the happiest days of their lives, and they appreciated to the very fullest extent the hearty welcome and generosity of those responsible for their enjoyment.
