MANGAORE NOTES.
Air. and Airs S. C. Ceilings are at present holidaying in the Hawkes Bay district. For the past week Air. W. Jay has been confined to his bed. All wishes are for his speedy recovery. Last Saturday week, the Alangaore Tennis Team journeyed to Mangahao to play a return match with the Mangahao Club,, and suffered a reverse by 44 games to 40. An enjoyable time was spent by all and the day was brought to a close by a successful dance in the evening. Air.. and Airs N. AlcKinlay left on Alonday for Wellington and Dunedin, where they are spending their holidays.
Athletes from Mangaore were represented at the recent Shannon Sports, Mr. Harry Headland carrying off the two sprints, while Mr. Arthur Coates led the Mangaore team to victory in the tug-of-war contest. Mr. A. J. Breen, of the Public Works Department, Puketapu, was a recent visitor, 'renewing old acquaintances.
On Wednesday evening last, Pastor C. Paap, of Shannon, delivered a lantern lecture to a very large audience, his subject being “With the Giant Zulus of Natal.” All listened to an interesting and descriptive lecture. Much regret was felt by Mangahao and Mangaore friends on account of the death of Mr. Allen Quartermain at the Wairau Hospital last Saturday. Mr. Quartermain has been one of the young assistant engineers on the Man* gahao dam construction. The road to Mangahao on Sunday established its record for motor traffic, no fewer than 40 cars going over the hill. The visitors included a party of Masonic brethren from Wellington.
Quite a number of children from the Mangaore Branch of the Sunday School, attended the annual picnic at the Vicarage grounds last Saturday. Prom appearances, all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mr. 11. T. Hartley, returned by the S.S. Marama on Tuesday from Sydney, where he has spent his annual vacation. Mrs L. Higgins, of Hamilton, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Fred Brown. Wireless fans listened in on Wednesday evening to Bert Hinkler’s address delivered from the Federal capital, Canberra. One operator received excellent results.
