Mr. and Mrs D. Bannister, of Mastcrton, were the guests of Mrs W. Cochrane during the week-end.

The annual meeting of the Shannon Golf Cl.ub is advertised in this issue for next Thursday evening. The club extends a cordial welcome to all prospective members and others interested.

A practical demonstration in handling bees and instruction in-beekeep-ing will be given at 2 p.m. on Saturday, on the 4 property of Mrs M. Coakley, Grey Street, by Mr. D. S. Robinson, Apiary Instructor, Department of Agriculture. All interested are invited to attend.

Good progress is‘being made with the construction of the bridge over the Manawatu river near Shannon. Most of the steel girders are in position and part of the decking is completed. The road formation at both ends is moving ahead quickly and everything points to the work being completed at an early date.

Messrs W. H. Gunning and J. T. Bovis left by the Napier express yesterday afternoon en route for Nelson, whore Mr. Bovis will attend the conference of Town Clerks to-day and also represent the Borough Council at the Municipal Association’s conference which will open at Nelson on Wednesday.

While playing with some other children at Yen. Bede’s Sunday School picnic on Saturday, a little girl named Irene Sands, had the misfortune to have her arm put out at the elbow, suffering a good deal of pain. The arm was put back into position and she is now doing as well as can be expected.

The Ven. Bede’s Church avIH hold its Harvest Thanksgiving Services on Sunday, March 18th, at 11a.m. and 7 p.m. Gifts of floAvers, fruit and vegetables Avill be very much appreciated. The 'members of Veil. Bede’s Vestry intend to hold a sale of the fruit and vegetables from the Harvest Thanksgiving on Saturday, March 24. Other gifts of cake and produce of any kind Avill be greatly appreciated.

The street stall held on Saturday under the auspices of the Shannon Women’s Institute to raise funds in aid of the Institutes “Local Distress Fund’’ proved most successful, the sum of £7 being cleared. During the day competitions were held, the winners being:—Small cake, Mrs Braun; large cake, Mrs K. W. Taylor; breakfast, Miss M. Gray.

Arrangements are well to the fore for the grand St. Patrick’s Ball to be held in the Druid’s Hall on Friday evening. These functions are always eagerly looked forward to and patrons can rest assured that the committee will spare no pains to make this season’s ball equal its predecessors. A first-class orchestra, “The' Alhambra ns,” has. been engaged to provide the music and with an excellent floor, dancers can look forward to an enjoyable evening.

The dog tax in the Horowhenua County for the ensuing year was fixed on Saturday bv the Council, being 2s tid per head for sheep and cattle dogs and 10s for house and sporting dogs, as before. Mr George Watson was appointed collector.

A deputation from the Levin District High School Committee- on Saturday succeeded in obtaining from the Horowhenua County Council a grant of £ls towards the establishment of commercial classes at the school. A report of the interview will be published later.

The County Council, on Saturday, received a request from the Levin Borough Council that the Wirokino iiding should be included m the proposed abattoir area. After a general discussion, it was decided, on the Chairman’s motion, that the matter be held over, and that in the meantime the proposal be referred to the I.evin and Chau branches of the Farmers’ Cnion for their opinion. A full report of’the discussion will be published x n a later issue.

A letter A\*as received at the. HoroAvhenua County Council meeting on Saturday from Mr J. T. M. BreAvster, C.E., Nelson, acknowledging the Cuiueil’s confirmation of his appo.n! inent as engineer and stating that he expected to take up his duties about the end of April.

A slight oversight caused Mr Justice Blair to address counsel as “my friend” in the course of his summing-up in the Hamilton Supreme Court on Saturday, in the ease against Arthur Raymond Gifford, charged with negligently driving a motor car so as to cause death. “I have not been long enough on the Bench to have sAveated out some of my bad habits,” explained His Honour, amid laughter.

Respecting the new Manawatu bridge, the Finance Committee reported to the Horowhenua County Coukcil on Saturday that, as it was of opinion that it was more satisfactory for each local body to be entirely responsible for its own loan requirements, it recommended that the Shannon Borough Council be informed -that its suggestion in respect to the raising of a joint loan cannot be entertained. The chairman explained that if a joint loan was taken up, this Council would become primarily responsible fpr the payment of interest on the due date. Unless, the interest was paid on certain 3avs, a percentage was added, which the Council would not be able to pass on. The recomendation was adopted. It was decided to call tenders for thp purchase of the old bridge.
