BOWLING.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS CONTEST. CLOSE MATCH AT SHANNON. In connection with the selecting of the champion rinks th s year to compete at the Champion of Champion contests of the Mauawatu Centre to be held at Palmerston North the area has ben divided into sections. Shannon is in No. 2 section which includes Otalti, Levin, and Foxton. On Wednesday afternoon the first try-out, which is on the sudden death principle, took place on the Shannon green when the representatives of the Foxton and Levin Clubs met. The i nks were as follows: — Foxton: Walton, Hayes,' Huntley, Wall (skip). Levin: Monk, Percy, Bull, Clements (skip). In the early stages of the game I oxton established a substantial lead at one time, leaving an advantage of lb to 5. The Levin players then commenced to get the strength of the green and by good bowling they got level with the Foxtonitos at the 18th head, the score being 18 all. The 19th head saw Foxton again taking the lead with .three up, but the 20th was Levin’s with a two, this leaving Foxton with a lead of one on the commencement of the final head. On the skips going down to play Foxton was lying the. shot, but Clements was taking no chances and by a good drive made a dead head of it. Both rinks were now right on their game, making every effort for a victory, and the head that followed was a good one, with Levin lying the shot when the skips tried conclusion. Wall tried to lay the shot by drawing on to the shot bowl, and although his bowl moved the other, it rolled too far and gave Levin the head with one up, makng the scores 21 all, necessitating an extra head bqing played. (Foxton’s third (Huntley) lay the winning shot, Clements, sifter two good attempts, failing to alter, ttfje position. Foxton thuswon by 22|ffS 21 after a hard fought

game Shannon will meet Otaki at Levin to-morrow and the winners will play Foxton at Levin next week. Shannon will be represented by J. Roach, E. Butt, H. Knowles and J. Gagliardi (skip). *
