SOVIET CONDEMNS POPE TO DEATH.

THREATENING LETTER SENT TO VATICAN.

ROME, January 13

The Vatican was amused rather than surprised to-day when it received an official communication from the Soviet Government condemning the Pope to death.

The communication came- by registered post and was addressed to'the Pope personally. It is signed by Rykov (president of the Soviet Council of Commissars), Stalin (head of the Communist Party), and other Bolshevist chiefs, and states that the Pontiff is condemned to death for having given money for the overthrow of the Communist regime. The Pope showed the document to several Cardinals and then had it deposited in the archives of the Vatican, where it will be preserved.
