CASES OF DISTRESS.

APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE MADE BY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. ,

There was a large gathering of members of the Shannon Women’s Institute at the special meeting called for .Friday evening, when the president (Mrs *E. Butt) presided. The meeting was called for the purpose of raising money to assist a case of need in the township, and as further even more needy cases were mentioned at the meeting, and as it was considered that unemployment, and families needing help would perhaps be more prevalent during the coming winter, it was decided that an effort should be made to form a fund for the purpose of assisting local cases of distress where possible.

The Shannon Institute has already been able to relieve the burden of illhealth and financial worry for one or two families, and it is hoped to considerably extend this branch of the Institute’s activities. Anyone knowing of distress, especially among mothers, and children, is asked to let the Institute members know.

A committee consisting of Mesdames Butt, Cole, E. J. Spencer, Wiggins, Radford, Tcfrv Scnr.. and Sinclair, was set up to arrange a tea stall at the next local stock sale. Tea) sandwiches and cakes' will be procurable at the sale yards, and those patronising the' stall will have the double (satisfaction of having a welcome cup of tea, and of assist ng a very worthy cause. It was resolved that the proposed picnic to Mangaore, Which was to have been held on March 10th, be foregone in favour pf a Street stall. Contributions towards this stall will be gratefully accepted at the shop on the Saturday from 11 a.m.. The matter of holding a series of weekly “Cheerio Afternoons” (such as were held a few yeais back and realised the wonderful sum- of £33), was then discussed, and it was decided to try something of the kind during the winter months.

A few further details regarding the annual meeting and election of officers were discussed, and a reminder of the birthday party on March 28th ended the meeting.
