INCREASE IN SUBSIDIES,

Some 185 additional miles of main highAvays are declared by a supplementary Gazette issued on Saturday, streets si|tuatcjd in oughs Avith a population of under 6000, which arc not eligible to participate in the proceeds from the petrol tax. , The object of the Order in Council gazetted is to place the boroughs referred to on a better footing than has been the case hitherto. Previously these streets, \A 7 hich from the continuation of main highways through boroughs, received maintenance subsidy on the same basis as did the adjoining main higlnvays in the counties; but in future the boroughs concerned -will be entitled to a subsidy of £1 10s for each £1 of actual expenditure involved in the maintenance of the streets, irrespective of the amount paid by the Main Higlnvays Board to the county councils in respect of the adjoining lengths of main highways. In addition the boroughs will be eligible to receive contributions towards the cost of construction and re-construction work on the streets that are noiv declared to be main higlnvays.
