ROADS AND OTHER WORKS.
REPORTS BY THE COUNTY ACTING-ENGINEER. ' The following reports were submitted to the Horowhenua County Cbuncil by the/ Acting-Engineer (Mr A. R. Callander) on Saturday, *nd were adopted: — Main Highways. (No. 1 Highway). 'Vyaikanae River to Otaki River sec tion.-~The recent sp<Ml of warn: weather caused a certain amount o. ibleeding on portion of this road on which penetration course has been p'u. down, and, chips have been sprea. where fieeded hr swept in from side on full length of this section. The surface of penetration work is in. satis factory condition. The foundation course oh this section has . again be eorae pot-holed and fairly extensive Repairs have been necessary. A gradlei •is also, at work with a view to strength
ening the holes and weak spots which 1 have become * apparent, and the roar
surface is now in much better ..condition.' One length of.pipe.in the twin pipe culvert at four .miles , 12-F chain (just south of D’Ath’s woolshcd) hn fractured and will need replacing. A iejommenciement jhas jfcxeen made the laying of bituminous; penetration course on this section, and satisfactory work is being carried out. Side drains and culvert openings have re ceived attention from the surfaceman. Otaki River-.Manakau .Stream , section.—The filling at the north approach to Otaki River bridge has been completed and is keeping shape well under heavy traffic. A 24in diameter rein forced concrete pipe culvert has been installed under the filling. A ramp from the filling to Riverbank Road is now being constructed. The penetration- course and sealing of same from Waitohu River bridge to the Otalti. railway crossing has been completed, the work having been done satisfactorily. . It is proposed to proceed-with the metalling' of D’AthV deviation short ' ly, and also to cohrplete metalling 01 deviation at the overhead bridge. Wor, in connection with the deviation at M G. Bevan-’s is proceeding very satis factorily, 2500 cubic yards of excavation'having been completed up to 21' December, last. The foundation cours' on this length has had to be repaired but no serious weaknesses have ap peared. The penetration course com pleted last season near Waitohu Rive: bridge has bled somewhat, but has re ceived the necessary attention and i in satisfactory order. The portion o. highway between Otaki River Abridge and Waerenga Road, has received at tention from the grader.
Manakau ‘ Stream-Levin section,— This length of highway is in goo order and very little bleeding has si far occurred. The portions of road a Ohau railway crossing and at the Wal kaw'a Stream, have been repaired wil power grader.
Levin-Wirokino Bridge section.— Considering tlu; very heavy nature < the holiday traffic, this length of high way is in fair order. A grader ha; been over the full length at frequen intervals, and similar attention wi. be continued. A small culvert nek: Poroutawhao has been repaired. (No. 60 Highway).
Levin-Waoku Strea'm section.—Tlii. length is in godd order and has re quired very little attention. A certau amount of maintenance work has bee: necessary in Queen Street.
Waoku Stream-Shannon section. —/ grader has been over- this length fro queintly. Maintenance metalling ha been carried out from riding bound ary to Shannon. Necessary attentio; has been paid to culverts and water tables.
Shannon-Makerua section.— Th length has responded to metalling an is now in good order again. Grade .work has also helped to keep it i: shape.
. Makerua-Tokoinaru River section.This length is still in very good ordo and has received regular attention S the shape 0± grading and patching. Re pairs have been necessary to the sou:! approach span of Toko-maru Rive bridge. $ •
Tokomaru River to North Count; Boundary.—Maintenance: metalling' o the northern end of th-’is length is- com pleted and the graded has also bee: over the s|etion. Tlfb road is now i: fair order. Some /loop fillings wliic had subsided, Jiuyd been brought up T grade again, and several culverts haw been cleaned. It is proposed to star shortly with the installation of cul ■vrAt on flat opposite Ma bin’s. " Plant.—No. 1 roller is on the roa; again. The new boiler for No. 8 (qwV reverse) roller is to hand and is bein' fitted. AH main roads have ‘been sub jeeted to a very heavy volume of trnffi recently, and generally have stood ui to same very well. Riding Matters.
Tokomaru.—Maintenance metal ha been spread on several district roads A small timber box culvert vvill shon ly be installed to overcome drainagi trouble in Kowhai Street, Tokomaru and an earthenware pipe culvert is U be installed on' the Kaihinau Road Buckley East '(Height's) Road has beer been repaired. Endeavours are being made to open up old' culvert on Pro toria Road and it is hoped to get worl on this road in, hand soon. Wirokino. —Maintenance metal ha* been put out on Gladstone, Arawhaie ‘ Arapaepae, T-ararua.andMuhunoa Ea ; and West Roads. Several complaint; have been received in connection wit! the water-race system, but all have been satisfactorily disposed of. As a’ roads have either had their allocation of metal for the year, or are in -satis factory order, No. I crusher has been closed down in the meantime. Routine maintenance is being carried out on several of the district roads. Otaki.—Work was commenced on the extension of the Walkawa Beach Road .but owing to the necessity of-now submitting plans and proposals to the Public; Works Department, the formation has been stopped until the necessary formalities have been observed.
It is intended to carry out certain im provements on Forest Lakes Road this mon Lh.
■To IToro.—District roads, water races, etc., throughout the riding have received routine maintenance and are in satisfactory order. The pipe culvert, on' Te Horo Beach Road, opposite Messrs Ashdown’s property', has been installed. Purvey lield work in connection with proposed low-level' suspension bridge over Otaki River above Taungata has been completed, bin owing to holiday's and pressure of other work, progress with the plans, etc., is dstayed somewhat. The work will be completed as soon as possible. Wandering stock. —The ranger reports having impounded 22 head of wandering stock during the period.
